Laura let the sources speak in this book which is exactly why it's so good. She turned upside down the idea that all women in 1950s America were cooking from cans and boxed mixes. She makes the point that this is what the advertisers who tried to sell these products would have you believe. Underneath the images of the happy housewife baking cake from a mix were thousands of women cooking as they always had -- from scratch.

I know this isn't going to be much of a review...people always want the whys and wherefores for why people give the rating they give...Right now, it is simply because I 'heart' Faulkner. He is one of the most magnificent story tellers ever. His way of getting deep into the heart and matter of mankind's relationship with mankind and nature is genius. I believe there is no one out there that can ever compare to his ability to tell a story...it doesn't even feel like so much a story than a history of a town. Yes. An imaginary town, but a truthful town nonetheless.

The Picture of Dorian Gray is a well-paced story in which Wilde puts into (witty) conversation differing ideas of life and art. Although the dialogue resembles plays such as The Importance of Being Earnest, the form here allows for greater engagement with the lives and hopes of the characters. Anyone interested in aesthetic criticism should not miss this novel.

Next to Junji Ito's Uzumaki, I'd have to say this is my new favourite manga! I've always wanted to read GC since I first got into anime and picked up my first manga (Masamune Shirow's New Dominion Tank Police). When I did locate one it was a Japanese import (not english). Who doesn't love trigger/detonator happy, gun toting bounty hunter women driving muscle cars around Chicago shooting/blowing up bad guys? THIS is what manga should be: fast paced, stunning visuals with over the top violence, explosions and gunplay... all around R-rated action straight out of a John Woo film. The manga even goes into detail on exactly what weapons are being used, thanks to side-notes. Highly recommended to hardcore manga fans. I'm going to do myself a favour and pick up the rest. A classic!

What an great, interesting book. I have not read the whole book so I cant comment on that end but I can definitely comment on the feel: I remember a great personal moment where I realized that Zuckerman would be telling the story of Seymour Levov as he imagined it, and me being very upset. I think this was because "The Swede" was such an interesting character in and of himself that I wanted to hear from him, or someone who actually knew him, what occurred in his life. I then realized that Philip Roth was the actual writer of the actual work of fiction including Zuckerman and Levov and that all of it was made up, but still wishing I could find someone who could tell me about the real Swede, every last morsel of information they knew about. Roth has definitely written a great character and set piece and I cant wait to read the rest of the book!
