This book pales in comparison to other Steinbeck works, and appropriately so. It is not fiction, and the fabrication necessary for import would contrive this heartfelt rendering of journey and home. A quick recap: Steinbeck builds a motorhome and travels about the country in the fall of 1960. And in search of America (which I'm not sure was exactly ever found), he came across Montana. I will just quote him: "The next passage in my journey is a love affair. I am in love with Montana. For other states I have admiration, respect, recognition, even admiration, but with montana it is love, and it is difficult to analyze love when you are in it. . . . It seems to me Montana is a great splash a grandeur. The scale is huge but not overpowering. The land is rich with grass and color, and the mountains are the kind I would create if mountains were ever put on my agenda." I can't say it any better than that

Might surpass Lonesome Dove as one of my favorite Westerns. I found myself wishing the whole book focused on the western narrative. But I accept the fact that the early Hollywood narrative also has it's place. Really excellent.

I had very high expectations going into reading this, as I've always enjoyed Didion's essays and everyone was raving about this book. However, Didion's remove from her subject did not work, for me, in this case. At times I couldn't identify with how determined she was to remain under the illusion that she was in control; it seemed almost unfeeling. I did find compelling the tragedy and absurdity inherent in her recognition of her own remove. Ultimately, though I'll go back and reread one of her collections of essays before I'll ever pick this up again.

This book would most likely appeal to girls who enjoy other historical fiction such as the Dear America books. In addition, for another story about a young girl's experiances on a whaling voyage, take a look at Hurricane: Open Seas, 1844, written by Kathleen Duey and Karen A. Bale.

One of my favorite books! I love Juan Rulfo, despite how much he loves to break my heart. These are his short stories. In his time I heard people hated him for being a realist when everyone else was into romanticism. He wrote a lot about how life was around him, and at that time and place, life was pretty darn depressive apparently. I doubt it is translated. I ordered it twice and was told it was out of print. My husband prepared for a long search and found it ten minutes into a Central American book store.
