_lexandrina_ipa
Alexandrina Ripa _lexandrina_ipa — Describing a large family celebration, with Avrid aware that his father was unsteady, he says, "The others were chatting and laughing and celebrating my birthday, but between him and me there was a tunnel of silence." I'm half way through the book, and until a few pages back, it is only because of the book reviews that I understand that Avrid's mother and father and younger brothers were killed in a terrible ferry fire.

Emmanuel Salas emsaelsa26770e — I loved this book. I think Kelle is an extremely talented writer. Mostly known for her poems, this book carries you to that painful place where her writings come from. Honest, raw, sometimes hard to read, it's so real that you feel her transformation throughout the pages. The loss of her son, the years of "not-knowing" about his life are uncovered as she searches to find out what his short life was like. It's a book about growing up, family, loss, and recovery. Beautifully done.

dreamhaha
Yabo Gao dreamhaha — I had very high expectations going into reading this, as I've always enjoyed Didion's essays and everyone was raving about this book. However, Didion's remove from her subject did not work, for me, in this case. At times I couldn't identify with how determined she was to remain under the illusion that she was in control; it seemed almost unfeeling. I did find compelling the tragedy and absurdity inherent in her recognition of her own remove. Ultimately, though I'll go back and reread one of her collections of essays before I'll ever pick this up again.

Bruce Moran bmoraz1975ced4 — This book was absolutely riveting. The subject matter was fascinating, full of twists and turns until the very end, and the writing was superb. It's almost impossible to believe what the human body (and spirit) can withstand.

Erkan Aytaç erkanaytac — ** spoiler alert ** 3:07 AM I just finished it. My eyes are all puffy. My nose is stuffed up. Invincible Summer is a must read. We witness Chase McGill grow up. He doesn't want to at first. And it seems, this is precisely his attraction for some. We read as he stands by while his baby sister grows (even if she does so, a little too quickly.) We read as he watches Noah, whom he idolizes continuously, run away. We witness his/their screwed up connection to their summer neighbors. We watch as his family falls apart then sort of comes back together. And on that last summer, something so... heartbreaking. The cover is misleading. It’s a girl on a beach. At first, I thought, a fun summer read. This was off the mark. Yes, there are moments where I had to laugh at how familiar they were with Camus, at how they always had something from him to throw out. But overall, The Invincible Summer is not light, not fun… it’s intense, raw and emotional. But I made myself read on… even if I had to pause every now and then. The author pulls no punches. The book isn’t just about one thing. There's so many things going on. It’s about a couple of things happening Chase, and to his family as he felt it (and I felt a lot as a consequence). It’s about: brothers, parents, girls, mistakes -- a shitload of mistakes. Then it’s about grief. Finally, acceptance. Bits of it made me uncomfortable, but she didn't hold back. Bits of, no whole portions of it, made me cry. I couldn't stop crying. INTENSE eARC care of Simon & Schuster's galley grab program
