dreamhaha
Yabo Gao dreamhaha — In 1856, twelve-year-old Celia Snow leaves her little brother and a comfortable life in a small New England seaport village to join her father, a sea captain, and her mother on a whaling voyage that could last up to four or five years. Desperatley lonely on the monotanous journey, with whales few and far between, Celia writes long, detailed letters to her cousin Abigail, back home. She describes the daily routine of life on board a whaling ship, a stay on the beautiful Sandwich Islands (now Hawaii), where her mother's difficult pregnancy leads to the birth of a frail baby girl that does not live long, a whaling venture into the Arctic, a first love, and more, as she matures over two long, difficult years filled with hardship, illness, and even death. This book would most likely appeal to girls who enjoy other historical fiction such as the Dear America books. In addition, for another story about a young girl's experiances on a whaling voyage, take a look at Hurricane: Open Seas, 1844, written by Kathleen Duey and Karen A. Bale.

toryerpenbeck
Tory Erpenbeck toryerpenbeck — This was more of a 3.5 star read. And not because the characterization was poor. It wasn't too bad actually. It was because the writing was so... average. Boring. Unexciting. This book takes place in the "alternate universe" created by the movie Star Trek: 2009 (in case the cover wasn't a dead give away). The synopsis says that Kirk is saving McCoy from being blamed. Well, the problem starts right away, but drags its feet until over half-way through the book when McCoy is "detained". In fact, there is little to no McCoy actually IN the book. And surprisingly, there's a lot of Uhura and Spock. Quite honestly, I kept reading only to see if they'd do anything more interesting with the characters, not because the story line intrigued me. Once McCoy is detained, there's a lot of nothing for 50 pages or so and then suddenly, as if in passing, the mystery is solved and resolved in under 30 pages. The end. The "love interest" for Kirk is nothing more than two-dimensional. Really quite lame actually, I didn't connect with her at all. I wouldn't have connected with anyone in the book if I hadn't already had an avid love for the characters. Worth your time? Maybe. But more than likely you will not finish it. Like I said, I only finished it because I kept hoping that futile hope that something, ANYTHING, would happen. And even though it didn't, I think I'm going to hold onto this book. Just for sentimental reasons.

vincentiusheri
Vincentius Heri vincentiusheri — The book is well-written. Though going backwards so much in a story is a literary no-no, he doesn't do terribly. There were phrases and lines I will not forget, such as "... feminine elaborations...." on page 24. It is as the professional reviews call, an ambitious novel. The character development was well-done. I knew each character, and when it got to the end, I was thinking it was the author who didn't understand the character as well as I did. I'll get to that in a minute. Other good things.... He's really inventive with imagery. When he describe the scenes where Dr. Phil's family was massacred, I was astounded at how vivid and eloquent the scenes were! Almost movie like in my mind's eye. I applaud any author who is able to court poetic imagery to fictional prose! So... what didn't I like? I felt there were few conventions. In describing the innocent and awkward love affair between the brother and sister, it reminded me of Harry Potter and other such books. There's an over-arching romantic aroma to the book that can get too strong and drawn out. The ending rather annoyed me, and I thought he conceded it to publisher's whims. For one thing, Father Mike would NOT have done what he did. There was no development for it! It was such a surprise, it was maddening. And the brief descriptions the author made during the car chase, (on father mike's mind was not godly thoughts and so on), where indicators that the author got HASTY! And the fact that the father died? What? That was sacrilege. The story does not need such roller-coaster plot devices so late in the goddamn novel! And I hated the utter absence of Desdemona from the book! I kept rereading the last passage she was mentioned to find out if I glanced over a sentence that stated she died. And it seems contrary to Cal's omniscient conscious he should not mention Desdemona because he forgot about her yet knew things he had no business knowing! I won't hate on Eugenides with his fantasy narrator. I thought the descriptions Cal gave of things she didn't know to be tasteful and progressive for the novel. I am not going to say, "Oh, he should have been more naturalistic or whatever" because he didn't do it badly. Anyway, good book. I loved it up to the ending, which was bland and irrelevant.
