The whole EYE WITNESS series is very well done, and they get progressively better from volume I to IV. It was really inspiring to see the story of Jesus and the Apostles told in a fresh new way, against the backdrop of a modern day action-adventure/mystery story. Robert Luedke is a great story teller and master craftsman. I had an opportunity to have Robert Luedke as a guest on my radio show, "Divine Intervention" and to hear him tell his story first hand. I'll have to read more John Irving. Writing a book that spans generations must be very difficult, but he pulls it off flawlessly. The characters are very alive and the setting is entirely absorbing and believable. He tackles some tough social issues as well and does it tactfully and intelligently. I got more than I bargained for with this book.

Decent book about different trends in Philadelphia's past that have continued to the present day. Written by a West Philly progressive, had some interesting things to say about the development of the middle class in Philly. Also I liked his description of a weird liberal conservative split represented by independence hall and valley forge park.

I must admit, I ought to give this another go as I hated reading it in the ninth grade. Perhaps my inexperience reading Dickens was the issue, as I went on to read Great Expectations and A Tale of Two Cities and really enjoyed them.
