Santiago Bedoya _antibs937f8d — A soft introduction to the story of the Iliad. The author does well to pick out key moments to form a simpler version of the classical text as we know it. The book brings with it the traditional colour and vividness of the classical Greek style of writing. This style of writing highlights the brightness, passion and warmth in the way feelings, thoughts and events were described throughout the book. The book explains the origin of the story of the Iliad, one of the greatest pieces of fiction of all time. Throughout the book the reader will learn the characteristics of each character for which they are known for e.g. Odysseus and his cunning, Ajax and his strength. The book gives examples of these in use throughout the story which makes the characters become that bit more personal. Finally the book describes one of the most famous use of tricky, the origin of the giant wooden horse, used to deceive the Trojans and give victory to the Greeks. I would say that this text is perhaps too advanced for a year 6 class to read and study individually. However singular chapters could be picked out as example texts to be studied closely, as it would be a shame for 10-11 yr olds to miss out on this style/form of writing. This text would also be a good way to introduce the use of metaphors and similes to the children.

Amol Pawar amolspawar — John Grogan is an excellent writer/storyteller. His tales of growing up in a strict Catholic family in Detroit suburbs is humorous at times, nail-biting at others, and each chapter leaves me wanting more. What talent--I'm glad I picked up this book. I ended up bawling near the end, but don't regret reading this book. Grogan's writing is inspiring.
