I found this a quick, straightforward, and somehow uninspiring read. The story was rich enough in information - about bees-keeping (but not enough detail - the epigrams simply outlined what was about to happen in the chapter, and the actual bee-keeping faded out of the story) - about racism in South Carolina (but I only have to think of Toni Morrison's Beloved to see this for a weak account) - about the black women taking salvation into their own hands (ditto). And the central character never engaged me. We are told that Lily is 14 but there is precious little to bring her to life. One things happens after another and Lily tells us exactly how she feels at each stage; and nothing is surprising. Overall it seemed as if the author had plotted her raw material on a whiteboard then worked through from page 1, putting just sufficient flesh on the bones.

I enjoyed this more than I expected to - and since I enjoy fantasy and magic, I don't know why I was so reluctant, altho I think it had something to do with expecting to be disappointed after all the hype. But it was fun, it was realistic about behaviors of pre-teens, and solving problems needed cooperation and teamwork by the students, which made Harry part of a team in more than name, and I think was one of the main draws for me. Now that I've begun, I will continue the series, and look forward to the year-by-year growth of all the students.

A light, fun read for me. When I have trouble deciding what I want to read next, I tend to pick up one of these Grafton novels. I hadn't even ever heard of this author until I met her daughter online through an adoption group. Definitely rather "fluffy" compared to other choices, but fun nevertheless!

Quite different from the film. I'd love to reread this. EDIT: reread in 2013. The first of many books I read where the heroine insta-got the boy because she seemed moody. distant, troubled and touched by something otherworldly. Gah! Today, I don't think there's any way a YA book would get published basically missing its ending: telling the reader what would happen but not actually showing the action. They changed the plot dramatically for the movie and gave it a happy, tidy ending with everything explained. The scene where Jan and her father sit in the glassed-in den and see the universe through the Watcher's eyes, via their television, was the one I remembered most strongly from reading this book as a child.
