Natalia Nat natha_lie — The second book that follows Macro and Cato is almost as good as the first, but not quite. Here we see Cato really finding out what it's like to be a man - standing on his own two feet, suffering betrayal, triumph and yet more betrayal... Scarrow never fails to keep me hooked, with Macro's skill and brutality, and Cato's underlying bravery - and I can really see his characters growing and look forward to reading more.

Felipe Bortolotto felipebortolotto — I found this a quick, straightforward, and somehow uninspiring read. The story was rich enough in information - about bees-keeping (but not enough detail - the epigrams simply outlined what was about to happen in the chapter, and the actual bee-keeping faded out of the story) - about racism in South Carolina (but I only have to think of Toni Morrison's Beloved to see this for a weak account) - about the black women taking salvation into their own hands (ditto). And the central character never engaged me. We are told that Lily is 14 but there is precious little to bring her to life. One things happens after another and Lily tells us exactly how she feels at each stage; and nothing is surprising. Overall it seemed as if the author had plotted her raw material on a whiteboard then worked through from page 1, putting just sufficient flesh on the bones.

Hamburgirl Star 331953956b195 — This sequel to Fallen is E.X.C.E.L.L.E.N.T!!! It had everything in the first book and more! I cannot wait for the next one, BUT...with all good things there's something not soo good. The bad thing about this book is, it can be a bit repetitive and Luce's love for just Daniel - to me, gets occasionally irritating. So I have to give it a 4 out of 5 (I really want to give it a 4 and three quarters out of 5, but the rating bar won't let me!)

Paolo Racca paoloracca — Harrowing, (and hard to read in parts) but ultimately uplifting.

Malgorzata Rosenfeld _algorzata_osenfeld — An amazing memoir about growing up in a disfunctional household with very little structure and with parents who were wacky, inspirational, crazy and probably abusive. Jeannette writes about her life with love and loyalty and I loved every single word.

Q Lin linqing — Really quick read, more like a short story. It should have got two stars really but I like the way Chuck writes, it keeps me wanting to read more.
