The first of many books I read where the heroine insta-got the boy because she seemed moody. distant, troubled and touched by something otherworldly. Gah! Today, I don't think there's any way a YA book would get published basically missing its ending: telling the reader what would happen but not actually showing the action. They changed the plot dramatically for the movie and gave it a happy, tidy ending with everything explained. The scene where Jan and her father sit in the glassed-in den and see the universe through the Watcher's eyes, via their television, was the one I remembered most strongly from reading this book as a child.
