It took me a very long time to finish this book, only because it obviously isn't a novel that I had to find out what happens. I finally burned through the last little bit, and I'm so glad I did. I loved reading about President Hinckley as just a regular person. Also, I now have no reason to complain about Chris' crazy schedule after I read about Pres. Hinckley being out of the country for weeks, coming home for a little while, then doing it all over again. Very long book, but so interesting.

Thorough without being overwhelming, this is a great starting point (or, in my case, refresher read) for the aspiring "macaroniste." The photos are very helpful. I especially liked the simple and straightforward instructions and troubleshooting for common problems/errors. I read through the whole thing in about 10 minutes, and I can guarantee that I'll actually use the book in the kitchen while baking. It gets 4 of 5 stars because 1) I felt it skimmed a little too quickly over some very important elements of the cookies (the 'feet,' for example), and because 2) I'm pathetically obsessed with these little French confections, and I want more more more information - more history, more science, more practical suggestions on how to make the perfect macaron. I've read reams of information (mostly online, in blog form) about this fancy treat, but I STILL want more. I think my fanaticism is affected in part by the fact that I can't get them anywhere near me. I can have them shipped (and I've done it!), but they're still sort of mysterious and exotic. And completely charming. Swoon. Okaaaaaay, geek-rant over. If you're into this sort of thing or just curious, here is as good a place to start as any. Then hit up The Google, and enjoy the journey :)

Love love love this series. Did you ever watch "Last of the Mohicans" with Daniel Day Lewis? Well the series reads like that movie. I just can't get enough. After checking out this book on good reads I'll have to check out this other author, Galdon (?) Apparently these two authors are often compared to each other. I'm currently on the 6th of the 7th in the series.

Genre: Biography I chose Ray Charles to read a biography because I think he is very inspirational. He defied the odds and beat his disablility to become one of the most talented and famous music artists of his time and history. I love the sound of the the piano and I wish I could listen to him play it. He struggled with blindness and deaths in his family when he was young. As a young adult, he matured fast, he had finacnial problems until he started to become very popular. He also had drug addiction and it required a near-jail experience to wake him up that heroin was unhealthy for him. I have only read a couple other biographies and they weren't as good as this one. I think that the author did a good job doing his research, getting his message out, and keeping it at a reasonable length. The others I read were boring and long. I suggest this book to people interested in Ray Charles, but if you're just looking for a different genre, maybe not the best choice. I enjoyed reading it, despite the fact that it was factualy. Usually, fictional books are much better and interesting to read.

If, like me, you don't know anything about Ned Kelly when you start this book, don't be scared off by the first two pages with the killer robot. That will all become clear later. Really, between the cover design, the killer robot, and the difficult style, I thought I was going to hate this book. Halfway through it, I realized I was totally in love with it. It was this paragraph that really did it for me: We thought you doomed and rooned the minute you walked out past the chook house and Wild delivered that great sidearm to your head and you was on the floor before you even stepped up to the scratch. It were a proddy pub so no one give an eff what happened to a mick they planned to drink your blood. Wild had heard you had been mocking Dummy and now he were for the kill. (178) Awesome.

I have to say how much I enjoyed This Burns My Heart. There is nothing better than getting swept away and lost in a book. Park's writing is absolutely beautiful and he really brings to life Soo-Ja’s struggle. I found myself almost in tears at Soo-Ja’s hardships, as though they were happening to me. Park also does a wonderful job of bringing to life 1960s Korea—I felt as though I had been transported to another time and place. I read THIS BURNS MY HEART over the course of two days, but between readings and even after finishing the book, I found myself thinking about and rooting for Soo-Ja as though she were a real person in my life. This is an inspiring, heartbreaking story of love and perseverance that will stay with me for a long time.

What an intense ride. Everyone in Travis' life either does drugs or drinks, and when he comes home from college (he flunked the semester) for the summer, after ignoring all of his friends, the party immediately picks up. Travis never meets his "perfect" parents expectations, and he can't escape the temptations all around him. He was never the greatest guy in high school, and his bad reputation has followed him everywhere. The heavy drugs and drinking made me feel super uncomfortable especially when I realized there was no end in sight. What would be the breakthrough, I kept asking myself. EXIT HERE isn't a story about happy endings or everything falling into place -- it's just not. Travis has to come to terms with his past, and (I was hoping) escape the bad influences that are all around him. (Like ALL AROUND HIM.) EXIT HERE is dark and completely heartbreaking. Readers who don't mind YAs with a ton of recklessness and adult situations in them should definitely pick this one up. Jason Myers is a fantastic writer, who crafted a FULL story with great character development and so many so many feelings. This book was published in 2007 and I couldn't help but think it's a well-done New Adult in many ways. Kids out of high school and in the real world. Even though these characters made one bad decision after another (and normally this would frustrate me and ruin my reading experience), I was totally captivated and probably could have read EXIT HERE in one sitting.

This is a fantastic critique of the collision of science and public policy. Anyone interested in health, dietary policy, or how science turns into public policy recommendations should read this book.

A much slower read than its paltry page count might suggest, Christine Schutt's Florida is the extremely affecting novel of Alice Fivey, who comes of age without her parents and who later struggles through her own failures and misgivings. If that sounds trite, or tired maybe, I can assure you that the language used in this book elevates it above the hundreds of other novels with similar conceits. I was inevitably reminded of Eleni Sikelianos' Book of Jon and its poetic (though surely there is a better word!) exploration of a close family member, and I think both have their successes and their failures. Florida does what it aims to do extremely well, though I have to admit that I tend to veer toward more traditional storytelling. With that said, if this were written in a way that wasn't so insistently aiming for depth in the language, it would probably fall flat. In other words, the things I liked so much about the book are also, for me, its biggest drawbacks. I found that when Schutt was being a little more literal (when we first meet Mr. Early, for instance), my attention was most piqued. She does remarkable things with details, almost effortlessly imbuing them with the symbolic depth they ought to have. And it's when we're given these details that the story soars.

hobbes' theory is a misanthropic, elitist vision that humans are basically corrupt, evil and stupid, and must be lead by a far-sighted guardian or "leviathan" which enforces private property relations and prevents people from following their "evil impulses." yikes.
