Adam Gooch adamgooch — "The Death of Tommy Grimes" by R.J. Meaddough III is a genius short story. The rest are fantastic too.

Juan Tello juantelloweb — A much slower read than its paltry page count might suggest, Christine Schutt's Florida is the extremely affecting novel of Alice Fivey, who comes of age without her parents and who later struggles through her own failures and misgivings. If that sounds trite, or tired maybe, I can assure you that the language used in this book elevates it above the hundreds of other novels with similar conceits. I was inevitably reminded of Eleni Sikelianos' Book of Jon and its poetic (though surely there is a better word!) exploration of a close family member, and I think both have their successes and their failures. Florida does what it aims to do extremely well, though I have to admit that I tend to veer toward more traditional storytelling. With that said, if this were written in a way that wasn't so insistently aiming for depth in the language, it would probably fall flat. In other words, the things I liked so much about the book are also, for me, its biggest drawbacks. I found that when Schutt was being a little more literal (when we first meet Mr. Early, for instance), my attention was most piqued. She does remarkable things with details, almost effortlessly imbuing them with the symbolic depth they ought to have. And it's when we're given these details that the story soars.

Luke Farmer lukefarmer — "The Fund" was recommended to me by a friend. If I had seen it in the book store, I would have passed it by as "not my thing" -- but I'm glad I took my friend's suggestion. Peter Jamison, the protagonist, is a high-ranking employee with a defense contractor. His project is scrapped and his entire team about to be laid off as a result. When he decides to go to bat for their jobs, he discovers a shadow organization funded by cost overruns from canceled projects -- and operating at the highest levels of government. Soon, his life is in danger as he delves further into the matter. Author Wes Demott (a former FBI agent) has put more twists and turns into the plot than you'd find in the Chartres labyrinth. It holds your attention from the first page, and the ending is completely unexpected. Recommended for fans of espionage novels.

Hanna Ländin hannalandin — I love Beatrix Potter. I love knitting. A book that combines both? This I had to see, simply out of curiosity. Unfortunately, the book was published in the late 1980s, so the patterns (mostly for children -- which I expected, considering it's Beatrix Potter) are extremely dated. Instead of timeless or even "traditional" patterns, most of them are the type of garments you look back on as a child of the 80s and say, "I can't believe my mom dressed me in that." You know, boxy sweaters with bulky frill around the collars, in pastel pink with a big bunny cross stitched on the front. Of course I wasn't really expecting to find any great patterns to add to my collection, but I thought maybe it would have some cute baby designs with a Potter aesthetic (you know, for the future baby I might one day have). Maybe if I were an accomplished knitter I could find a way to salvage some parts of the patterns, and update them to fit into this decade...but...I'm not. Oh well. Looks like future baby will be sticking to Baby Gap.
