This book follows the tale of several survivors of the Chicago fire, I am required to read a Non-fiction book once every 9-weeks, and so I decided on this quick and simple historical narrative. This book is far easier to comprehend then the other books I have reviewed, namly Moby Dick and the 1001 Nights, but even still it was a charming read and an interesting story. It follows survivors such as the O'Learys whose barn the fire began in, Daniel "Peg Leg" Sullivan who discovered the fire, and the firefighters working day and night to stop this blase. I will withhold the more specific events of this book for anyone who choses to read this slightly better than average book.

After two less-than-stellar outings, Maeve Binchy is back. Her new novel, Heart and Soul, is a wonderful, fun read that takes readers inside a new heart clinic at St. Brigid’s Hospital. Dr. Clara Casey has taken the job of creating the clinic out of a disused storage depot on St. Brigid’s ground. It’s unclear where Clara was before she took on the enormity of this task, but she has only one year, the length of her contract, to get the place up and running. Although she has full support of the hospital’s board, her nemesis is Chief Financial Officer Frank Ennis. Frank believes that the clinic is a bad idea and goes out of his way to thwart Clara at every opportunity. However, it isn’t long before Clara has hired a staff and gotten the place ready for opening. Clara’s story is the glue that binds the other stories together. She fights with Frank on almost every aspect, from hiring staff to decorating. At home, Clara faces more difficulties, including two grown daughters, Adi and Linda, who don’t see why they should contribute in either monetary means or individual labors. They seem to think that their mother owes them a living. Then there’s Clara’s soon-to-be-ex-husband, Alan (whom she refers to as That Bastard Alan) who tries to prey on her emotions. At the clinic, a romance is in the air. There’s one budding between Fiona Ryan and the new doctor, Declan Carroll. Meanwhile, Clara and Hilary are conspiring to fix-up their less-than-ambitious children without hints that they are involved. Like in many of her novels, Binchy has populated her stories with characters that’ve appeared in other works. Readers will remember the lovely Fiona from Nights of Rain and Stars. One of the more interesting new characters is the young Polish immigrant, Ania Prasky. Both spunky and shy, I hope we see a lot more of Ania before Binchy truly retires. When Fiona calls off her engagement, her reasoning is less-than-clear. This is Heart and Soul’s only drawback to an otherwise wonderful way to spend an evening or two. Fabulous! I love all things Phantom and this was outstanding. I thought the Opera Ghost was much scarier in the book and I was intrigued with the idea that this all really happened. I find myself romantically clinging to Leroux's opinion that this was no myth, yet I still feel somewhat the skeptic. Are the events true? No? I suggest you read the book, including the prologue, and decide for yourself.

Okay, I could have lived without all the religious stuff at the end and I had to read the accompanying notes to get a handle on some of the agricultural/sociopolitical background, but, basically: Wow. Amazing, really amazing how he gets into people's heads. (Note, I did not read this in Italian, I just clicked the image that looked like the cover of the version I did read.)

I've never read a book that was more beautifully written than this one. Every second I was reading it, I found myself wanting to write. Not many books do that.

This was an amazing book that told the story of how to bring revival to a city. Its message of going back and discovering heritage and then nurturing it and calling it to the present was extremely helpful and enlightening.
Enjoyed this book immensely. It was well written and the story was interesting.

Ray Kurzweil has a long history in technology. In the 1970s he pioneered a dramatic combination of bleeding edge equipment into the first automatic text reading machine for the blind. At the time this was something of a herculean feat, a machine that could recognize text on a printed page and translate it (albiet haltingly) into spoken words. In Spiritual Machines Ray takes us where he believes the unconstrained trajectory of high technology leads: transformed humanity and machines combining into something both hyperintelligent and "spiritual". While I agree this course is possible, Ray's vision threads a rather narrow and "best case" path forward. Recall that by this time we were to be flying in supersonic aircraft and driving our cars at 200 mph on the freeway. I read lots of books about the history of technology, kind of the mirror image of Ray's book here. Technology tends to get bogged down by political, physical or social limits. In the case of supersonic aircraft it was (first) concerns over the effect of sonic booms, then pollution and most recently the release of global warming gases. At some level you can say these are all just engineering problems, but they take time and money to solve. So, while I dearly hope for the kind of rosey future Mr. Kurzweil predicts, I try to keep in mind that we need to keep steering society in the right direction to get there.
