Not as good as the first one... I like how the Tar Man is in the 21st century, and its entertaining to see how he adapts, but at the end it fell flat because the kids are BACK to the 18th century and they need to get the machine AGAIN... (I still love Gideon though <3)

Red Smoke Rising has everything in a fantasy novel I love...action, lots of fantasy characters, including a minotaur, and a gritty, well thought out storyline that kept me interested from the very beginning. Sure, there are a few tiny story line character issues, things that happen which don't quite jive with the character's traits, but they are so insignificant that I am not even sure they are mistakes and maybe Mr. Anthony meant for them to be there. I can't wait to read another novel by Mr. Anthony as after reading Red Smoke Rising it isn't hard to tell that he is a very talented writer!

Another in the teen dad genre. Better than Angela Johnson's The First Part Last, but not as compelling as Hanging on to Max, by Margaret Bechard. Set in Australia, and that's interesting. I did love the main character and his determination to care for to his daughter.

I knew it would be great...it was...his books always are. Nervewracking to say the least. Very interesting to learn about terrorists and Saudi Arabia and Dubai. Of course it was just fiction, but it sure seemed like it could be real to me. The U.S. President seemed pretty real too, wonder if he was based on the real one...he was useless in this book.

This was a lovely book written by a man from the point of view of a woman -- and done exceedingly well. Hosseini is a marvelous writer who wraps his reader in Afghanistan and clearly shows its simple beauty, its suffering and chaos over the years, and the resilience of its people. His style is at once lyrical and matter-of-fact and I marvel at the ability of someone whose first language is not English to write in English this well. The characters are fully developed and the reader comes to understand their complexities, their faults, and their virtues. The friendship between the two protagonists is tenderly and carefully explored as it grows, and the strength that they bring to each other is touching. Hosseieni has taken a lot of hits for presenting Afghanistan in a negative light, but he really does not, and I urge future writers to ignore the reviews that posit this misrepresentation. Clearly he loves and grieves for his native land. Anyone with a grain of sensetivity can pick this up from the book. Does he expose its attitude toward women - yes. Is this a criticism? Perhaps, but it is also a fact. I loved this book, as did my S.O. The only criticism I had was that it could have been cut a bit in the details, especially at the end where Hosseini goes on and on about the secrets contained in the box. As they say in Amadeus: "Too many notes."
Barry's writing style is very conversational and accessible, something I value in a gifted theologian of his caliber. One of my favorite chapters in this book is called 'Resistance to union: a virulent strain.' He methodically reviews some of the nuances that exist in such resistance through personal storytelling, which makes the discussion come alive. In the end, he reminds us of its continued existence in our hearts (like the chicken pox virus lodged in our nerve cells) and the need to constantly express to God our 'profound desire to encounter and trust Him and our almost as profound fear of doing so, and ask His help to overcome our ambivalence ~ and keep overcoming it' (pg. 36). The book is a great read for anyone who wants to get better at paying attention to God and growing closer to Him in friendship.

Seriously, I gave Dhalgren five stars? That must've been before I reread it.
