Morgan Tennant morgantenn24 — Warning... This won't be a popular review for the many fans of this book, but so be it. I did actually finish over half of this book, but what a let-down... I'm not sure what gave this author or her editors the idea that this would make a great book. Even more baffling is that it received such great reviews. Are we really that unhappy as a society that we need a book like this to tell us what all of us probably already know? I guess some points served as nice reminders, but there wasn't much new information here, from my perspective. Sorry... I tried. I really did.

Ahmed Mady ahmedmady — I'm getting kind of frustrated at this series because I feel like I barely get into the book and it's ending. I wish she had just combined them all into a two or three book series. I just requested the rest of the series from the library so I can just continue reading without it being so fragmented.

Pri Assunção priassuncao — Barry's writing style is very conversational and accessible, something I value in a gifted theologian of his caliber. One of my favorite chapters in this book is called 'Resistance to union: a virulent strain.' He methodically reviews some of the nuances that exist in such resistance through personal storytelling, which makes the discussion come alive. In the end, he reminds us of its continued existence in our hearts (like the chicken pox virus lodged in our nerve cells) and the need to constantly express to God our 'profound desire to encounter and trust Him and our almost as profound fear of doing so, and ask His help to overcome our ambivalence ~ and keep overcoming it' (pg. 36). The book is a great read for anyone who wants to get better at paying attention to God and growing closer to Him in friendship.
