Imaginary chats between Marco Polo and Kublai Khan as the latter realizes that he finds the material conquests of his empire unsatisfying. (If I recall correctly, they are actually imaginary within the scope of the book, as Polo and Khan shared no language; viz., they sit in Khan's garden and imagine the conversations they might have about cities that don't exist.) Perfect, assuming you're in the mood for it.

My son and I both enjoyed this read (he is eight). His story really helps put it all in perspective.

This is a book about two sisters who carry on a prophecy. they are turned against each other. one must find a way to bring the souls of samael (or satan whichever you prefer) into the world and the other must keep her from doing this. in other words one sister good the other evil. Lia- one of the sisters- narrates. it turns out that she is the one sister that can bring samael into this world and bring about the beginning of the apocalypse. this is the first book in a trilogy. one of my favorite reads so far this year.

The best fantasy I've read in a long while. This is the book I always wanted to write. Plenty of adventure, secrets and a fast pace story. The sequel didn't capture me quite as well but still looking to be a great triology from a first time author.

I bought this book on a whim and I am so glad that I did. I read it in three days at work. The characters have such depth and the writing style just grabs you into the story and holds you there. By far the best book I've read in the past few years. I've suggested it to everyone I possibly can, and hopefully after seeing good reviews, more people will read it too.
I reread this for Book Club, and I wasn't any more impressed the second time around. I most enjoyed the end, when we find out what actually happens to each of the characters. Because the narration switches between the viewpoints of each of the four daughters, and I found myself getting frustrated that some of them were used more heavily for plot narration and some of them served mainly for their own character exposition (this second time around, I enjoyed the character exposition narratives more than the plot narratives, as opposed to the other way around for my first reading, which I thought was interesting). Basically, I've read way better books about Africa, and I didn't think any of the characters were strong enough to justify the book being mainly about them. Had the book focused more on characters' relationships, rather than the characters themselves, it might have been more interesting. But the father, the most inflammatory character, was mainly avoided. More exposition of the girls' relationships with him might have been more interesting. I could never work out whether we were to view religion as a life-insurance policy or a life sentence. I can understand a wrathful God who'd just as soon dangle us all from a hook. And I can understand a tender, unprejudiced Jesus. But I could never quite feature the two of them living in the same house. You wind up walking on eggshells, never knowing which Tata Nzolo is home at the moment. Under that uncertain roof, where was the place for my girls? No wonder they hardly seemed to love me half the time--I couldn't step in front of my husband to shelter them from his scorching light. They were expected to look straight at him and go blind.

Wow! Powerful and masterfully written--so many perspectives, so many tragedies, so many triumphs--I cried and laughed in the coffee shop where I was reading--it takes a lot to make me cry in public. A truly excellent book.
