One of the best children's books ever. I bet it could still make me cry.

The dark fantasy vision of Australian author Garth Nix in this first book of the Old Kingdom Trilogy (sometimes known as the Abhorsen Trilogy) is powerfully realised! The world he's created is compelling and at times reminded me a little of Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials series. His writing boasts some unique and effective descriptive phrases that jumped out at me from time to time. If I was picky though, I'd say that the weakest area of the book is the romantic portions which I felt were quite awkward and unconvincing. Also, the characters are a little cliche and sometimes behave inconsistently, making them seem less believable. And occasionally i felt some plot events were a touch contrived. However, these are relatively minor complaints, because I was certainly drawn in by the book overall and am keen to read the following two books in the series—Lirael and Abhorsen. I hear he's also working on 2 extra books to expand the original trilogy.
found this at work and was bored so I started to read it. Pretty erotic and interesting so far!OK so I finished it. Really a dark look at the underbelly of what life can turn into when you dont believe that you deserve better! Depressing ending but still....not a bad read for a day.

I got about halfway through this before I realized I'd rather actually be reading fiction. No offense, Mr. Wood. You seem pretty smart.
Just like anything else in life, I think the more you need and invest yourself in this book, the more you'll get out of it. I thought it was an easy read (I love short chapters) and a likeable author. I have a hard time with non-fiction, bio pics, that stuff in general because you can't craft the story like you could with a work of fiction. I think this was an ok read but I didn't love it. Her story is no different from anyone else I know, her journey is no different, the landscapes and adventures are more often the rule rather than the exception now that I am also living abroad. So why should we care? I think we care because it is comforting to know that other people have gone through the same sh1t. It's inspiring, it's hopeful, and although lots of people are strong enough to dust themselves off and move on after a divorce, some can't. I wanted to know more about the locations she visited. I wanted to hear all about the food, the places she saw, the characters she came across. She did it a little but never too in depth with anything. We don't even know her ex-husband's name or what really went down in that marriage, and because those things are missing I feel disconnected with her story. It would help me understand the situation better. I get it though, what's missing is not what this book is about. I'm just saying I would have liked it better. The most interesting part of the book, for me, was Yudhi's (the Indonesian guitar player). I thought his story was amazing, and completely devastating getting torn from his wife and NYC post-9/11. If there are any stories about post 9/11 deportation, I wanna hear them. The book was honest. Casual. Like talking to a friend.

Michael Connelly'in yazmasını seviyorsanız, bu kitabın tadını çıkaracaksınız. Mickey Haller karakterini ve Harry Bosch'un karakteri ile etkileşimi geliştirdi.
