This was one of those books I felt I couldn't not read given the reviews/response it was getting as a Very Important Book. I was ultimately disappointed. The guy can surely write, but I always felt I was reading a story about a story rather than real, lived characters, that it was a simulacrum of the Great American Novel rather than the real thing. I wanted to care about the characters, but I was never able to get over the hump.

I read the book and then watched the movie directly after. They are very similar, except in the movie a great deal is missing from Robbie's time in WWII and so of course it is changed a bit. Also, as great as the movie was (James McAvoy especially portrayed Robbie very truthfully) it was a bit more obvious with a certain character which really took away from the story. I have to say that I would have preferred Atonement to end at the end of the third segment and if I read it again I'll surely skip the very end. I think it was a strong ending and the last tiny bit just really didn't do it for me. At times it dragged slightly for me, but overall it was an amazing story.

Great, humorous mystery novel. I started at 10 and couldn't stop reading until I finished it 4 hours later. I have to know whodunnit in mystery novels! The writing class element was funny and really well done. Thank goodness that sort of thing didn't happen in the writing classes I've been in!

see NIV bible for main comments. this is a nice rendition of the KJV into more modern language. and the thompson chain reference is just good for fun perusing of connected phrases and ideas. at least thats the idea.
