And I thought junior high was rough....This woman went through the six circles of hell in her Lord of the Flies style school years. Throughout the book I wanted her to just give it up, though. She moved on, has had a great post-school life, and I wanted to see her forget about those tossers she had to endure for years and not give them anymore satisfaction. Instead, she was determined to go back to a class reunion and - finally- gain some sort of acceptance and, perhaps, apology, from her former tormentors. I can understand that fantasy at age 13. However, as an adult, isn't it just great to remember that the school bullies no longer matter? They are probably all paunchy mid lifers now...and no doubt duller than you are because they did not have to spend much time developing a personality and a sharp wit. However, like poking at a sore tooth with ones tongue, this book makes you want to read it to the end to find out if the author gets her satisfaction. I bought this for the teen collection when I was working as a librarian and it really resonated with the kids. This book was checked out often! I think young people need to hear stories of people who have survived and thrived the bullying years and moved on to happy adult lives. This is why I wished the emphasis was less on going back and getting closure with these creeps. To me, this gives the adult bully or former bully even more power. However, to each his/her own. And anyone who ever had to deal with bullying needs to cope with it in his/her own way.

[This review is based on an Advance Reading Copy] When the Archdiocese of San Francisco announces that it intends to close the historic St. Brigid Church, the parishioners are initially stunned. But they quickly rally to defend their church, a fight that would drag on to become the longest running parish protest in the United States. This is the story of that parish and of the parishioners devoted to saving their landmark church. Their battle takes them to the Vatican, to city hall and to the state capital, all while the Catholic Church finds itself plunged into the chaos of the sex abuse scandal that was coming to light at the same time. The members of the Committee to Save St. Brigid come to understand themselves and their faith more deeply and strongly through their long struggle, and in the end learn that as important as the church building might feel, the real strength of a parish is the people who form the body of the parish. While some might consider this book heavily biased against the Archdiocese, the book is generally well written and provides quite an intimate look at the motivations and beliefs of those who struggled to save St. Brigid. It is especially powerful in showing how these people’s faith actually grew through the conflict, even in the face of the resistance of the Church leadership and the growing sex abuse scandal that enveloped the Church. It is clear that through all the disappointments and disillusionment, these people still found something in the Church that was worth holding on to and fighting for. That they have been largely unsuccessful in achieving their goals does not necessarily mean that they have failed.

I add here a second book from the much-acclaimed Scottish writer A.L. Kennedy. This novel, like Original Bliss (see below), exemplifies Kennedy’s trademark mixture of tenderness and something just this side of pornography. The plot is a bit too complicated to summarize briefly. Basically, Kennedy deals here with two themes: writers and the neuroses that both motivate and hinder (destroy?) them, and the relationship between fathers and daughters. The underlying premise of the second of these themes is a bit hard to swallow (a father was estranged from his daughter when she was very young and then establishes a close relationship with her much later without her knowing he is her father and this relationship lasts for years without her finding out the truth that everyone around her seems to know), it does allow Kennedy to explore the complexities of feelings that can exist between a father and a daughter, particularly when the daughter is the very image of a lost and much-loved wife. There is considerable warmth and passion in this story although the novel's obsession with writers and their traumas could be viewed as a bit too much navel gazing--but writers DO like to stare at their own navels! In the final analysis, though, I must raise an issue here that will surely get me excommunicated from any fellowship of serious readers. This book is 550 pages long, requiring a slow reader like me around fifteen hours to complete. Let’s arbitrarily say that this book brought me ten “enjoyment points.” That would be .67 points per hour. Now let's assume that a smaller book took me eight hours to complete and brought only six points. That would be .75 points per hour. Which would be the best investment of my readerly time? I can hear the protests, “How crude! Importing a productivity model into something as sacred as reading!” Well, damn it, I’m in Singapore as I write this and everything here is about productivity. How could the spirit of this place not infect me? My final judgment remains that this book is just too large and contains a fair number of unnecessary pages. Maybe Kennedy would justify the latter by saying that obsessions, such as preoccupy the central character in this book, need to be repeated over and over again for the sake of verisimilitude. Maybe, but “at my back I always hear times winged chariot drawing near.”
