dalton3813
Tim Gardner dalton3813 — In a world where magic is real and the supernatural is almost normal, bodyguard Celia Graves has survived a vampire attack which made her a half-vampire and awakened her latent Siren abilities. She's battled a Siren Queen to the death and twice faced down a demon that wants to kill her--slowly. She's also had her heart broken--twice--by her old flame, magician Bruno DeLuca. Perhaps the worst thing was the discovery that Celia's life has been warped by a curse laid on her during childhood--the cause of everything from the death of her little sister to the murder of her best friend the same night that Celia became an Abomination. An ancient rift between the demonic dimension and our own--sealed during the destruction of Atlantis--begins to open, threatening to loose all the demons of hell on humanity (including the one personally bent on destroying Celia). Celia's hellish recent experiences have given her the unique combination of abilities needed to close the rift. But to overcome the curse, which nearly guarantees her failure, she'll need to join forces with people she no longer trusts...and put people she has come to care about directly in harm's way.

_ani_ose
Danielle Aspitz _ani_ose — I usually only laugh at the failure of others, but this time I laughed because the thing I was looking at was funny. David Rees is funny like that guy you know who's funny, and that's the best kind of funny you can get.

angeladon
Angela Don angeladon — [This review is based on an Advance Reading Copy] When the Archdiocese of San Francisco announces that it intends to close the historic St. Brigid Church, the parishioners are initially stunned. But they quickly rally to defend their church, a fight that would drag on to become the longest running parish protest in the United States. This is the story of that parish and of the parishioners devoted to saving their landmark church. Their battle takes them to the Vatican, to city hall and to the state capital, all while the Catholic Church finds itself plunged into the chaos of the sex abuse scandal that was coming to light at the same time. The members of the Committee to Save St. Brigid come to understand themselves and their faith more deeply and strongly through their long struggle, and in the end learn that as important as the church building might feel, the real strength of a parish is the people who form the body of the parish. While some might consider this book heavily biased against the Archdiocese, the book is generally well written and provides quite an intimate look at the motivations and beliefs of those who struggled to save St. Brigid. It is especially powerful in showing how these people’s faith actually grew through the conflict, even in the face of the resistance of the Church leadership and the growing sex abuse scandal that enveloped the Church. It is clear that through all the disappointments and disillusionment, these people still found something in the Church that was worth holding on to and fighting for. That they have been largely unsuccessful in achieving their goals does not necessarily mean that they have failed.
