The Things We Do For Love is an emotional journey into one woman's life-stifling heartache of needing to experience motherhood; of wanting and needing a child to love. It is a story about one of the strongest bonds between females, the bond shared between a mother and her daughter. Another young woman finds herself on the other end of the spectrum, a woman who has yet to experience a mother's nurture and love. Together these women find themselves linked in ways they couldn't imagine, discovering new meanings of love and the ability to receive and give it. There are moments that are heart-wrenching, tear-rendering, but also triumphant and heartwarming. Angie DeSaria Malone is a woman in limbo, a woman who feels incomplete. She craves a child and as the years passes without her wish materializing, the sense of loss becomes more acute. As a result her marriage also begins to crumble. She can no longer depend on the strength of their love, and it now becomes evident that the years have taken their toll on their marriage. The things that can sustain it no longer exist: care, love and understanding. After all is said, and unsaid, only unfilled dreams, a painful yearning and a resilient ache remain. With a divorce finalized, Angie retreats to her childhood hometown, a place overflowing with love from her family. She settles into running her family's restaurant business, against a family reluctant to change, all the while seeking peace within herself. There she meets Lauren Ribido and quickly a bond forms. Where Angie has known a life of boisterous family gatherings, laughter and love, Lauren has not. She has an alcoholic mother who cannot care for her, much less begin to love her. As her nature, Angie takes Lauren under her wings and begin a journey that will forever change both their lives. Angie is not unaware of her decisions, realizing the consequences that can occur but she is determined to help. As she mothers Lauren and as Lauren seeks her love, Angie is also faced with second chances. For love, for family and for motherhood. Three ingredients that should come standard but for Angie has always in the past been out of reach. A touching story that captures a woman's spirit so well, showing us how enduring it can be, and the things we do for love. I wish, though there was more focus on Angie's husband story, to see his side on the story. I also hope there's a future story for Lauren in store.

The author two weeks apiece in three different mental institutes. Of course it is easy to get committed if you lie or state that you are likely to hurt yourself or others or have money or insurance, so I wasn't surprised that she found easy access to each hospital. At the first hospital, anyone was accepted and most people both medical professionals and patients, had given up hope. Nobody tires to get better, and so nobody does. The same is true at the second hospital, although the author is given more freedom. Her insurance company decides that if she can have day passes and not take meds, then she doesn't need to be in a hospital. Finally, at the third hospital, which takes a more holistic health approach, the author makes the revelation that regardless of the facility, mental illness can't be fixed by external forces. Drugs can help for some cases, but the person involved has to put in the effort as well if they want to get better. After this point, we read about her efforts to get past her own mental disorder.

I originally read this book in about 2003, and have continued to read it at least once every couple of years. Something in the story just resonates with me. Amazing book.

Read three times, some episodes more than that. A great work of art, and yet, at the same time, a work of art that is self-absorbed, cruel, and abstruse. It's hard to reconcile the two sides...it just is what it is. I suppose it's like one of those people you sometimes meet, inward and aloof but brilliant; you go along with them for as far as the road takes you, you admire them, you take away what you can, but in the end it has to go its own way and you have to go yours, and that's okay.

a collection of crime/mystery stories, which all feature the appearance of a mysterious little man with bells. the first time read it, i totally loved the whole concept; the second time, i had to admit it all was a bit a repetitive.... but i still really like the idea of mr. quin as an advocate for those who lost their voices. i'd recommend this for an entertaining and a bit meloncholic read on a rainy afternoon or on a winter night, wrapped in a blanket.

Claiborne and I fought tooth and nail to acquire this for Pegasus...it's 100% worth it to read about the great Catherine in her own words!
