I liked this book, it was a good quick read. I enjoyed reading Penny's story unfold after she died, and it left me wanting to look under the couch and collect all the spare change! I gave it three stars because it was just good, it didn't wow me, and definatly not a best seller.

Reason for Reading: next in the series Volume Three is all action! Max Damage and the new Jailbait set off to take out the crazed "skinhead" followers of Plutonian who are armed with nuclear weapons and causing much damage. Max and J. meet up with an old friend of Plutonian's who joins their group and the new Jailbait is given her own new superhero name. From the old friend we learn a lot more about Plutonian's past from a different angle but mostly this volume is action scene after action scene with a fair amount of dry humour added for relief. Just what was needed at this point in the storyline. Domingues returns as the artist for the first two chapters and as I stated in my review for volume 2 I do not like his portrayal of M.D. The occasional downright goofy looks on his face are just not in character at all. What a thrill it was to see a new artist take over for the last two chapters, Marcio Takara, who incidentally is the only artist credited on the cover. Takara's style is much more raw, and Max is back to his masculine, powerful, dangerous looking character. A happy ending as we see our new trio running off together.

This book presents the sobering idea that there is no longer such as thing as nature, because humans have caused such massive changes by their presence and behaviors; that humans have altered everything (including all forms of plant and animal life) on earth. I read the book when it was first published in hardback form, and it made immediate sense to me, unfortunately. I’ll never be able to look at “nature” in exactly the same way as I did, although I can still enjoy what there is of it, and feel even more motivated to protect what remains.

Of course this is a classic. I think about Woolf's concept of an androgynous writing all the time. It's one of those essays that really makes me debate myself into a crazy death match and I still can't decide what I think about it. Woolf is really one of the smartest literary theorists of all time regardless and this has got to be one of the most cleverly written essays ever.
