Elio Esta elio_estaba89 — This is a short story collection that I love that nobody seems to have heard off. This Egyptian author won the nobel prize in 1988, I guess mostly for his Cairo Triogy which depicts arabique regular family life before anybody else wrote about it (or at least it was translated). This book Fountain and Tomb however is more recent and tells little stories of different families in a town and what their fates become based on the choices they make. That may sound pretty ordinary, but these stories are very dense and only 1-2 pages, but he somehow manages to get all the right details in there to paint a complete picture. It is like when somebody is really good at drawing they only need to put down a few lines for you to recognize the shape of what he is drawing.

Emrah Gökçe emrahgokcea7f7 — This book presents the sobering idea that there is no longer such as thing as nature, because humans have caused such massive changes by their presence and behaviors; that humans have altered everything (including all forms of plant and animal life) on earth. I read the book when it was first published in hardback form, and it made immediate sense to me, unfortunately. I’ll never be able to look at “nature” in exactly the same way as I did, although I can still enjoy what there is of it, and feel even more motivated to protect what remains.

Bruce Sabala besabala — One of my favorite books of all time. He is my favorite writer and this book is just insanely cool. In almost all of his writing that I've read, he takes the smallest details and the most insignificant things and the most outcast characters and gives them Biblical proportions, and in this case, several overt Biblical allusions to make sure that you make the connection. The funny thing is that when you give someone the synopsis of the story it sounds pretty boring and just plain depressing but he makes it fascinating and beautiful and terrible and amazing....(my gushing continues indefinitely). He preaches a lot but it doesn't feel preachy. It's insanely dark without being hopeless. It breaks your heart over and over and makes you want to be a better person. And somehow, he still manages to make it seem natural, unpretentious, and most incredibly....entertaining.
