I was glad I read this. It made me aware of happening in the United States I had no idea had taken place. The Japanese interments in California from an 11 year old girls perspective.

This was on my to-read list all of last year. What a wonderful story teller Kathryn Stockett is. I so wanted to sit down with my grandmother and her maid, Mary, after reading this. I had to so many questions. So many things that I know that I did not pick up on as a child or even young adult. This will stay on the bookshelf as a re-read is a definite must.

I actually couldn't get into his other books, but I thought this one was excellent. It's the story of an archaeological dig in Israel, but the book is basically two parallel stories--one from ancient times and one from modern day. In essence, one reads the story of what really happened in the area and is thus "in" on the secret of how certain items came to be buried where they are. At various intervals, the story switches to modern day and one reads about the archaeologists attempting to infer the actual story (that you now know) from the findings. I should say that the stories are converging rather then parallel; they do meet at the end in a satisfying way. Though the book is certainly dense and contains an incredible amount of detail, the two-stories-at-once plan in this novel really works to make it consistently interesting.

I am giving the intriguing premise of this book - and, more significantly, the relationship between Jamie and Claire - three stars, and the rest of the book one star. There are some GREAT sex scenes in this book, and the author does a surprising job of creating a really great connection between the two lead characters that builds steadily and believably beyond just physical attraction as the book goes on. I was swept up in their journey and invested in what happened to them, and that investment is the only thing that kept me reading. The rest of the book is a jumbled mess. Ms. Gabaldon freely admits in the author notes that this was a practice book for her, to see if she could even write one. Kudos to her for doing it, and getting it published to boot. My hat's off to her, truly. But the book READS like a practice book. I won't be reading the rest of the series, but if she ever decides to abandon historical/violent/action/war-ridden/time-travel fiction and write a straight-up romance novel, I'm on board.

Good story. Lost love, racism, forgiveness. Such possibilities. Unfortunately bogged down by endless narration. More than enough description of the lovely Northwestern US islands and its flora. Plus true-to-life courtroom scenes: boring, long, drawn out. Yawwwwwn.

I know many people love this book. I just couldn't buy the dog as a narrator, suspend my disbelief as I might.
