Hands down, I still think of the Silmarillion as Tolkien's magnum opus, and I was excited to hear that one of the central stories of that work would be presented in an expanded format as a book unto itself. While Children of Hurin is a good book, it offers little that is new for those who have read either the Silmarillion or the Book of Unfinished Tales. I had expected to find the story of Turin Turambar told in a more personal, Lord of the Rings style in this book, and instead found simply an expanded version of the tale told in the Silmarillion. While this is not a bad thing, I expected more.

What a fantastic book!! It was thoroughly enjoyable. It's a rare event that one finds a book that, even though the ending is no mystery, can still grasp one's attention with the tenacity of a pitbull. This book had so much detail and imagination, it was exhilarating. Beauty is the retelling of the classic fairy tale Beauty and the Beast. It tells the story of a the youngest daughter of a merchant named Honour and nicknamed Beauty though she is the least fair of her two older, virtuous sisters. It is a riches to rags to riches of love story. Some themes dealt with include: self esteem, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and one that I especially like is that the heroine is the standard of beauty for the enchanted prince named Beast. She compares herself to her sisters, whom the Beast has seen, but he only sees her as beautiful; he compares her to no one. This book was enchanting and breathes wonderful life into the classic tale while not bastardizing it with fluff and needless side plots. I recommend it to everyone. Robin McKinley writes sincerely and sweetly and is genuine in her love for all her characters. Four stars and two thumbs up!!

This is an original story, full of romance and fun, with great period research and a charming mixture of erotic sex, innocent laughter, and historical romance.

Of course I felt obligated to read "that scrotum book" that just won the Newbery Medal, but I ended up being sweetly charmed by Patron's innocent protagonist. I certainly recommend it as a quick read or a great read-aloud if you have kids or if you're just into that kind of thing.
