At first I thought this book would be a journey through the life of a young convert raised with a strong spiritual background. Like most books today it just ended up undermining the beauty and importance of Islam as a spiritual inspiration. They only thing the character seems to learn is that she doesn't have to be a practicing Muslim, she can just be believe in the message. This undermines one of the most basic tenants of Islam and Sufism, that practice and spirituality meld to make the well rounded and observant person. As an immigrant tale, this book does well imparting upon the reader the sense of longing like that of the exiled. All said, I was hooked until the end.

Beautifully illustrated, but I think the text would go over the heads of most children. A picture book inspired by Thoreau's Walden?! That is like asking a grade school kid to understand Jabberwocky (trust me it doesn't work). This book is more suited for adults who are young at heart.

Interesting concept for a story. Each chapter could have been a stand alone story but they all fit together for a fun book. I dont like to expose my children to anything too dark though and there are some scary and dark parts of this story.

Wow. What a heartbreaking astonishing compelling story. Learning so much about the Sudanese Lost Boys through this young man Achak's story simultaneously stirred my soul and horrified me. I'm glad I've been more educated about the conflict in Sudan and what has happened to these many refugees. And some of these stories will never leave me they are so disturbing. And I trust I am better for knowing them. And a big shout out to Dave Eggers for consistently being so dedicated to telling important stories.

I found this not only an interesting look into one of the most influential minds of the era, but insight into how high end politicians must prioritize events, people and actions. Her version of history brought fascinating juxtapositions to light. Controversy hovered over every move of her administration. She accepted that and explains her underlying philosophies for how she made her decisions. She earned her "iron" image every step of the way and was proud of it. I admit I skimmed some highly detailed economic parts about the battle over the Euro near the end, but jumped right back in after a few pages.
