This was the second Jonathan Tropper book I read and it certainly didn't disappoint. The way I connected to the characters (especially being an author) was wonderful. Tropper has a great sense of humor, and that's important to me (especially being a stand-up comedian). It's nothing deep, and it won't necessarily change your life, but it will keep you entertained. I know Joe. I like Joe.

Boring. Well written, but boring. Not as boring as a lot of "classics", but still only worth reading just because a lot of other people have read it. The narrator isn't the main character (what is it with old authors doing that?), and the main character (spoiler) dies. Several people die. Several people have ongoing affairs. There are hardly any consequences for some people, and there isn't much of a lesson in the story any where. At least it's short and doesn't have lengthy description. Admittedly, I had to read the book for a class, which makes it hard to find something good in it.

This book is worth reading for the story, but even if it weren't, it would be worth reading for Snicket's explanations of "dramatic irony" and "hackneyed" as well as his denouncement of the phrase, "meanwhile back at the ranch" preceding his continued use of said phrase.

Formally well off and educated, Parvana and her parents, two sisters, and baby brother now live in a one room bombed out apartment. Only her father can go out and sell their belongings for money to buy food. As if things weren’t bad enough, Parvana’s father gets arrested and sent to prison for no reason. Now it is up to Parvana to go out and make money for the family to eat and survive. So her mother cuts her hair and she dresses in her dead brother’s clothes to disguise herself as a boy. Ellis writes the book with characters that will appeal to young teens while revealing the atrocities that people had to endure under the Taliban regime. Parvana displays courage and bravery that is amazing for a child her age. It is amazing what children can do in such adversity. This is a great book for children to learn about conditions are in other parts of the world and what people must endure, and to appreciate the freedoms and opportunities that we have here. It is unbelievable that women are treated with such oppression today in the 21st century. Digging up bones of bodies to sell for money, selling off wives false legs because they wouldn’t need them: these are just a few of the traumas dealt with. But there is also laughter and hope in this very engaging story.

Won a copy from Goodreads! The story line didn't hold my interest. It was hard(for me) to keep the many characters straight. If you enjoy reading about 17th century England - you will more than enjoy the book.
