I picked up this book in an airport between flights, it's been pretty hyped up and was obviously the most-purchased book from the store. Even the girl on the plane next to me, obviously not an english-speaker, took great efforts to tell me that she loved this book. The book's protagonist is an adolescent shepherd and reads as if it were written by one. Coelho abandons all subtlety, capitalizing the phrase "Personal Legend" and using it every other page in a story that has the ingredients of a successful fairy tale but stitches them together in such a barebones superficial way that reminds me of $1.50 starbucks cups wisdom or motivational stories told by commencement speakers with a religious agenda. It's initial message of 'follow your passion' is soon altered to 'the story of your life is written by the same hand who wrote the story of the world' and then to 'the heart of alchemy is the Soul of the World [sic] which all should strive to join.' 80 pages was more than fair. Very willing to sell/swap. Needless to say I didn't read any of the "Plus" aspects of this edition.

Yes! I loved this book!! It veered dangerously close to chick-lit, but something saved it from getting quite that obnoxious. Maybe that it was just well-written enough? (I did have my moments of being fed up with the protagonist). Did every man I ever met go to J-school*? Is it a rule in the XY-chromosomes-training manual to coax what you want from a woman and then leave the dried-out hollow husk the way we girls might learn how to sew on a button and brown a roast? Oops--twenty-first-century correction--the way we girls might study how to be a titan of industry and double-cross your best friend? * Journalism school, Columbia in particular I also think this book demonstrated the virtues of me picking books based on the title, backed up by the first sentence. Because it wasn't until a subway ride or two that I realized that the author's name is MAMEVE MEDWED (and looked at the author photo, horrified). I'm sorry, MAMEVE MEDWED??!!!! I'd thought it was Maeve [something Irish], but MAMEVE MEDWED???? Screams made-up name. It's like some kind of a weird anagram. Also! I realized I don't think I actually told you what the book was about -- the protagonist takes a chamber pot she inherited from her mother onto Antiques Roadshow, where she finds out it could bring her fame and fortune -- but then a lawsuit follows over who truly owns the pot, instigated by the children of her mother's partner, who the protagonist grew up with (the venimous sister instigated it, the once love-of-protagonist's life brother waited in the shadows).

Room was an interesting read. Since I teach kindergarten right now, I found the various activities that Ma came up with to teach Jack interesting, though I have to admit to finding it a bit of a boring section of the book - granted, there is a certain kind of boredom that comes from interacting only with young children for a long period of time, so that did add a bit to the feel of the read. Narrating the book in Jack's voice was interesting, especially as it helped layer on the sense of Ma's struggle to find herself outside of her child. One thing that this book brings up, and Ma comments on it in the interview she does is that people react to the idea of a five year old being breastfed with a lot of disgust or discomfort - Ma asks why that is the part of this situation that people find strange. I've noticed in discussions about the book that readers have a similar negative response to the breastfeeding that seems to be stronger than their reaction to the kidnapping. I have to say, it disturbs me that so many people from Western cultures react in this way - after all, breastfeeding children that are older is not abnormal in all cultures and I strongly feel that it shouldn't be perceived as disgusting. It's too bad I didn't read the book for a book club because I think it would be more interesting to discuss than it was to read.

These books just get better and better. Patricia Briggs doles out little tidbits of everyone's lives to make the waiting worthwhile. You get some new information on Zee, Samuel and even Adam. I really like the way Ms. Briggs weaves elements of previous stories in so you know whose who and what happened in just a few sentences. With series books published so far apart, it's often difficult to remember specifics. I believe the last installment had vampires; this one, the Fae. Mercy is an amazing character who just takes hit after hit until she's finally had enough and strikes back. I enjoyed the multi-layered storyline: multiple kidnappings, Mary Jo's betrayal, the werewolf challenge, Adam's injuries and Sylvia's defection. So much going on but nothing lost in the hoopla. Wonderfully written and even Samuel gets a happy ending.

The book message is simple and pretty obvious. I agree that "like begets like" so the Secret's "Law's of Attraction" is not to hard to follow. This book is basically about Karma and believing that if you put good energy out then you'll receive good energy in return. However, some of the people in this book are totally spacey and cult-spiritual so as long as you bypass all that jazz it's a pretty decent book.

A friend at work brought me this one and suggested I read it. We've bonded over Harry Potter and Percy Jackson, so I know she's got taste. This one makes me question it a little bit. I agree with the reviewer who said this book was mediocre, unoriginal, and cheesy. It reminded me a lot of the Twilight series in that the characters were dopey and way too dependent on each other. The love story in this one may be even more ignorant and dependent than that one. The concept of the book was interesting, but it just wasn't once you started reading. I was bored and annoyed by the characters. It was a chore to finish this book.

I love Krakauer. He gripped me with Into Thin Air, and Into the Wild begs the question: What drives a person to walk into the woods and never come out? In particular, when help was so nearby? I find the concept of society vs nature fascinating, especially because the boy in this story shunned society in favor of what he expected nature to be: tranquil and easy, peaceful and kind...when if anything it is the exact opposite.
