This novel was far too long for the story it presented. It really wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't earth-shattering, either. Though drawing pretty obviously on the writings of Austen, Bronte and Burney, Klassen creates rather vivid characters, and her style of prose is very inviting and appropriate for the time period. Those elements combined to create a nice mood and an enjoyable story. By the time I reached 200 pages, though, I was honestly wondering how much more story there could be to tell. By the third hundred pages, I realized that most of what went on in the 200s could have probably been eliminated - or at least heavily edited. If I have any major criticisms, it is that too much time was spent on a very slow-moving plot and not enough on character development, making some of the character changes or burgeoning romances seem slightly contrived. If asked for a recommendation, I would say that it is a nice book, but not worth the time it takes to read it. If it were shorter, or moved more quickly, it would definitely be worth the effort.

Slightly plodding pace with too many "rabbit-speak" words I had to keep looking up in the back glossary. I liked the story and the main characters, but there were a lot of secondary characters that I kept mixing up. In the end, I relied on the Sparknotes to zero in on the parts I wanted to read while skipping wide swaths of the narrative.

Wonderful Making-of of the movie with lots of pictures and background information. I wonder if my parents knew when they gave me this book back in, oh, I think 1985, that this would be (one of) the start(s) of my many fannish obsessions. Ah, who cares, I was already lost long before I got the book. We played Ronia and Birk in the forest even before the movie came out. I guess I was just born a fan...

I absolutely hated this book. That's my over-riding memory of it I'm afraid. I had to read it in secondary school when I was about 12 and I never remember disliking a book so much which was surprising as I was a voracious reader. I just remember having absolutely nothing in common with the characters - a group of English upper / middle class school boys whereas I was a Scottish working class girl. I just could not relate to the story at all and just wished they would all kill each other as soon as possible so the book would finish. The fact that we had to read the book in class at the pace of some of the slower readers (agonisingly painfully slow readers) and then discuss it afterwards, which was like trying to get blood out of a stone, probably didn't help. Never, ever again.

I would argue that the book is more clear and perhaps easier to understand than the movie. But this is one of the rare cases where, at least in my opinion, there is more magic in the film. One of the things that I would have changed about this book was its character development. It is told entirely from the point of view of the main character, Griet. I never felt like I could connect to any of the other characters, or really care about them. Vermeer is portrayed as so far about understanding, even for Griet, that I was kind of turned off of him. And the author could have gone so much farther into the relationship which develops between Griet and Pieter. I felt like you could follow along easily, but never actually got taken along for the ride, if that makes sense. There was a lack of connection in this book which disappointed me. But I was impressed by the writing. There is a meticulous nature to how the author chooses her words, and in the actions of the character Griet that I found very appealing. It was certainly worth reading, and the story was interesting, although I would only recommend it to someone who enjoys good writing and introspection over a complicated plot or a lot of action.
