Sam Ibrahim siribbington — This novel was far too long for the story it presented. It really wasn't a bad book, but it wasn't earth-shattering, either. Though drawing pretty obviously on the writings of Austen, Bronte and Burney, Klassen creates rather vivid characters, and her style of prose is very inviting and appropriate for the time period. Those elements combined to create a nice mood and an enjoyable story. By the time I reached 200 pages, though, I was honestly wondering how much more story there could be to tell. By the third hundred pages, I realized that most of what went on in the 200s could have probably been eliminated - or at least heavily edited. If I have any major criticisms, it is that too much time was spent on a very slow-moving plot and not enough on character development, making some of the character changes or burgeoning romances seem slightly contrived. If asked for a recommendation, I would say that it is a nice book, but not worth the time it takes to read it. If it were shorter, or moved more quickly, it would definitely be worth the effort.
