Hadn't read it since high school but read it again under the covers last summer -- and got very little sleep until I'd finished it. I love characters that can't stop themselves from making the wrong choices...I love Lily Bart.

This book is a career girl story told in true sex-and-the-city style. I liked it!

Four stars may be a little high, but perhaps I'm reacting against the prevailing wisdom about this book. Michael Chabon calls it "halfhearted" and says that even lovers of McCarthy must set it aside. Anthony Lane compares the book to Elmore Leonard's crime novels, but (wittily, I'll admit) writes that "if I want Leonard, I’ll take him neat, rather than slow-filtered, drop by drop, through a layer of Faulkner, then laced with the Book of Jeremiah." James Wood calls it "an unimportant, stripped-down thriller." They're all correct, I guess, but Wood is wrong when, in praising the novel’s dialogue, he writes that it is “so good that we can confidently expect the Hollywood version to excise it.” The Coen brothers didn’t excise it, of course (but then again, maybe they aren’t Hollywood, properly speaking). And I guess that’s why I give the novel four stars: because it is rendered so clearly that the Coen brothers could make a great movie out of it. Everything that’s in the movie is in the book: the dread, the landscape, the dialogue, the weirdness. It’s a testament to the Coens’ attention to detail and skill in realizing a cinematic vision (and it must be said too that what they cut from the novel—a female hitchhiker that Llewelyn has some heart-to-hearts with before he is killed; a half-baked epilogue that tries to develop Sheriff Bell’s character further and lend the novel’s events greater signficance—is no great loss), but it’s also a testament to McCarthy’s own abilities to create these vivid images, characters, and events. So what the hell—four stars it is.

This book had a great story but the medical jargon was too graphic for me and often went into too much technical detail for a non-clinician.
