A fascinating historical novel based on real people, Red Water is told from the perspective of three different women, who happen to be three wives of the same man: John D. Lee. Lee was eventually executed (some say he was the scapegoat) for the Mountain Meadows Massacre in Utah in 1857 where over 100 men, women and children were killed by a group of men disguised as Indians. These "Indians" turned out to be Mormon settlers, and the scandal and the massacre is said to lead right to the top: Brigham Young. The three storytellers are all very different: one is a young spitfire, still a rebellious teen; another is a faithful older woman; and the third is a young woman fresh from England. The tale is a fascinating read, so much more so since it is based on true, chilling events.

I had been told the entire story of the kite runner before hand which for sure I though would have ruined it for me, but it turned out nothing was really ruined at all thanks to the strength of the writing from Hosseini. It urges you to get involved in all the characters lives even if you may not want to. Story line was fantastic, writing strong, and characters even stronger.

This was a really cute book that actually made me think about some things/learn some things--I don't normally go for books that anyone would call cute. I could have called the ending about a quarter of the way in, but that was almost a positive, somehow. I also really am curious about the Channel islands now.

I enjoyed this book because I enjoy reading about cycling and cycling races. I was disappointed to discover that the writer who was supposed to give us the scoop on what it was like to be with Lance Armstrong "inside the postal bus" was not one of the riders selected to ride in the Tour de France, instead he watched it on television like the rest of us. I also decided that journalists who are cycling fans write much better books than cyclists who try to be writers. Michael Berry is a cyclist trying to be a writer and there was nothing commendable in his writing. I enjoyed the anecdotes and some of the insights from his perspective as a rider who is not a star. This is a book I would recommend only to others who read very piece of cycling literature they can find.

This is bleak, gray, and unrelenting, but it is excellent. Well written with short to the point sentences. It will stay with you, and should be a wake-up call to everyone. I think there is a ray of hope at the end. Don't miss it just because it is tough.
