I think the title is misleading. There are many profound essays in this book and Why I Am Not a Christian is merely one of them & a short one at that. Many regard Bertrand Russell as a 19th Century Socrates and those who don't, should read this text. His final essay after he was denied a teaching position at City College, prior to his professorship at Harvard, I think is his best essay ever! It is so eloquently written and speaks of liberties, justices, & simple logic, so important to us all. He could have drafted the Constitution. Many did not learn in college, when assigned B.Russell, that he was an Athiest. He explains his religious (or very much lack thereof), in the first essay in this book, prior to giving his opinion on religions in general. His intellect and his ability to communicate are inspiring. He says so much in so few words. As befitting his style & at his prior request, there was no religious ceremony after his death, in the mid 20th century. His ashes were spread over the Welsh Mountains. His literary works live on!

I have decided to lay this one to rest. I just can't get through it. I was hoping that this book would focus on the colorful personalities of the founding fathers, but instead it is pure military history, which has never been one of my interests. McCullough really excels in the character sketches of the major players of 1776, on both sides of the war, particularly in his portrayal of General George Washington, who is fast becoming a hero of mine. However, these interesting bits were too few and far in between for my liking. Only very rarely do I give up on a book halfway through, but this one is just wasted on me. I've pretty much been spacing out in the car the entire time I was supposed to be listening. 'tis a shame, I was really looking forward to boosting my knowledge of American history.

I'm still reading, but I'm thinking everyone over 35 should read this...for the trip down memory lane, if nothing else. Finished and it was fabulous! (And thought-provoking, too.)

I haven't read this cover to cover but I've read many parts of it. It is a must-read for anyone interested in history, politics, and truth.

Someone recommended this book, and it was short and gay, so I picked it up for a quick read. Wow. You'd either love or hate the style of writing here. For me, the flowery and glittering world of Weetzie Bat was a hard one for me to get through (being the urban and gritty guy that I am). A friend of mine was right though when she said that it is a cool read for how it depicts Los Angeles of the 80s.

In this second part of the series, you want to kill Rabbit a little bit less. He is still the same guy that lives on reactions rather than actions, but his mind has also never been more interesting. It seems that this is the novel in which Updike becomes aware that he is in the process of writing a chronicle of global growth seen through the eyes of America, or the quintessential American. It's funny how this kind of growth can seem stunted and all-too-quick at the same time. I think the book's cultural commentary is self-aware, but not necessarily in a bad way. It's full of interesting conversations--the kind that people always mean to have but don't, and the kind that is forgotten in a decade's time, smoothed over and made "sense" of by hindsight, if someone like Updike isn't there to write it down. I liked this book better than the first. But I'm confused about Eccles' brief reappearance in the story; it doesn't really tie up any loose ends and it doesn't offer anything new either...

More than just a slice of life. It's a story of a particular time and people. Mr. Russell didn't shy away from common occurances of the time and it wasn't always comfortable to read these parts of our history. The spirit of people who don't give up and move toward a better life is inspiring.
