I love Beatrix Potter. I love knitting. A book that combines both? This I had to see, simply out of curiosity. Unfortunately, the book was published in the late 1980s, so the patterns (mostly for children -- which I expected, considering it's Beatrix Potter) are extremely dated. Instead of timeless or even "traditional" patterns, most of them are the type of garments you look back on as a child of the 80s and say, "I can't believe my mom dressed me in that." You know, boxy sweaters with bulky frill around the collars, in pastel pink with a big bunny cross stitched on the front. Of course I wasn't really expecting to find any great patterns to add to my collection, but I thought maybe it would have some cute baby designs with a Potter aesthetic (you know, for the future baby I might one day have). Maybe if I were an accomplished knitter I could find a way to salvage some parts of the patterns, and update them to fit into this decade...but...I'm not. Oh well. Looks like future baby will be sticking to Baby Gap.

This was not my favorite of the Clockwork Century books. I still really enjoyed it, but the main character held me back a little bit. I don't like Rector. Addict characters in general tend to rub me the wrong way and it's a testament to Cherie Priest's authorial skillage that I enjoyed this book so much even with an addict, and a teenager to boot, taking center stage. While I found Rector to be a whiny little shithead the plot of the novel was delightful. It's a tight little story that rips along quite quickly from beginning to end. And there is bigfoot. There are also hints dropped here and there in the book that have me itching for Fiddlehead, the next book in the series. If you've enjoyed the other Clockwork Century books this is more the fun you've come to expect. Although, like the others I would imagine it could be read just fine as a standalone. Don't really know why you'd want to skip the other books though.

Dear God, this man is incredible. For would-be investors, Buffett offers some practical insights and lessons you will not easily forget: research matters, management matters more, and there's no reason not to take a big bet on something that you trust. But perhaps the more important lesson from this book is for those career hoppers and ne'er-do-wells who remain constantly uncertain what they want to do when they grow up.... Buffett works his tail off at everything he does, with a single-minded focus that is awe-inspiring. He's not greedy, but rather infused with a sense that every dollar should be spent trying to earn more dollars -- and that is his sole mission in life, something he's very good at, and something he enjoys tremendously. When you find something like this, go after it! (I think mine might involve reading books)

Whether to put more emphasis on one's politics or one's personal life has been a running debate between activists, organizers, and rebels of all sorts for a long time now. Where does your personal life stop and your efforts to change the world begin? Is there something in between? How do you go about living your life that goes along with your principles? These questions sometimes haunt me, because you can never really separate yourself from mainstream consumer society no matter how much you dislike capitalism. However, in this life, while you make compromises so you can exist, at what point do you go too far? I'll usually veer away from these sorts of thoughts since I've seen it cripple many politically-minded people and make their heads spin. The worst part is the questions continually come back. Relationships are a huge part of who we are simply as human beings. Whether it's sex, friendship, love, simple companionship, or something in-between all of these, humans exist as social creatures. In fact, any healthy social movement for change develops strong relationships on individual and mass levels. So what's so radical about that? Well, it may look more radical when you start to think about how many things in our society have been the result of domination, control, and exploitation. Ultimately, much of what we think of as romantic relationships in the West is based on about male control, patriarchy, and jealousy, (which again, we all grew up with in this society). Alternative relationships, or open relationships where no one person has control over another's feelings, is an alternative model. In "Redefining Our Relationships: Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships," Wendy O Matik, explores how an open relationship, based on trust, honesty, and maturity, would actual work. When it comes down to it, I highly recommend this book. I've gone back and forth on the monogamy vs. polyamory issue. (I don't like the term non-monogamy because I don't like defining myself as what I'm against.) Sometimes I won't do it because my partner is against it, and other times we compromise to adopting it. Wendy writes here that the key towards a successful open relationship is to be honest with one another that humans will be attracted to other people, and they can't shut that part of them down just because they're with someone else. Jealousy, much like rage, can shut a part of you down and hate someone you're supposed to love, or when someone cheats on monagomy. Wendy also makes the good point that relationships aren't just a black/white thing where you have lovers and friends, and nothing else. Another excellent point she makes is that open relationships do not mean irresponsible relationships where you don't have to take your partner's feelings into account or can just go marathon bed-hopping without letting your partner know what's going on. If you're even just curious about open relationships or wish to explore exactly what love is, Wendy-O Matik is a great start, since it's a fast, short enjoyable read.

A. Lee Martinez's most widely-known book, and, arguably, one of his funniest. This is a typical buddy story about a redneck werewolf and a geeky vampire oddcouple, Duke and Earl, who -- in search of beer and pie in rural Texas -- accidentally save the world from a giant Cthuloid horror. Wait... Okay, so that's not typical at all. But it's a blast. Some of the best parts of this book are when Earl, the vampire, is falling in love with a ghost. You really feel for the poor sap. The story is hilarious and comes highly recommended. Go buy it now!

i was reading this during my last temp job in chicago. i'd take it down to the food court/mall in the huge corporate building i was working at and just pace the hallways, burried in the book. it was unnerving to read Lolita in public. i felt concerned that others, strangers, might be able to see the disturbing images in my head projected by poor, pathetic humbert humbert. i consistantly and simultaneously thought "oh my god, this is so good" and "oh my god this is so disturbing." after one particularly revolting admission of humbert's i said aloud "oh my god!" and some passing business man smiled back at me and said "that good?" and i couldn't respond. i kept thinking... no... no, it's not that... i learned a lot of words. limpid of course. also nacreous
