Vrushali Vinod vrushalivinod — I have a great love for short stories and when I saw this one in Borders I had to get it. The writer is new to me but I do like what he's doing. A man is haunted by his awareness of a secret monster sleeping at the bottom of the local pool; when his disguise fails a moose must flee for his life from a sportsmens’ party; the sea and a house fall in love with one another and are initially frustrated in their attempts to unite; an octopus finds his solitude and spoon-polishing habit interrupted when his nephews come to visit from the sea; boys crawl into dark places where they face their fears and find light; a father, attempting to save his son from a well, learns to fly. And because I think everyone really must read this collection here are some random bits and pieces: From The Book: The woman returns from the store with an armload of books. She reads them quickly, one by one, over the course of the next few weeks. But when she opens the last one, the woman frowns in surprise. All the pages in the book are blank. Every single one. From The Swimming Pool: The man stops by the public pool on his way home from work. It's something he does from time to time. He enjoys the laughter, the splashing, the sound of feet slapping concrete. He stands by the fence, taking it all in. That's when he sees the shark. From The Octopus: The Octopus was spooning sugar into his tea when there is a knock on the door. Come in, says the octopus over his shoulder, and the door opens. From The Shadow: Once there was a man who was afraid of his shadow. Then he met it. Now he glows in the dark. From The TV and Winston Churchill The television thinks it knows better that the family that's sitting staring at it. Why do they watch this garbage? it thinks. It's so empty -- so stupid, so dumb. From The Poet A man sits down and writes a poem. It is not a great poem, he knows, but still, he has written it, and so it makes him feel proud. Everywhere he goes, he recites it in his head. Then one day the man has a great idea. I will send my poem off to be published! he says. And so he goes and buys an envelope and sends it on its way. From The Knife Act A woman and her friend are in a knife store. Hey, says the woman, you ever see one of those shows where the guy throws knives at the lady? Yeah says her friend, and the lady doesn't get hurt? Yeah, says the woman. We should do that! Okay! says the friend. Okay, if you want! So the two buy lots of knives and run off to go practice.

George Galarza georgegalarza — “I have a story that will make you believe in God” The plot line of Martel's life of Pi is simple. An indian boy is traveling to America with his family on a ship of zoo animals. Their is a storm and all that survives is one life boat with the little boy, Pi and several other animals including a tiger. Who survives? What happens? And how does this story make one believe in God? Of any book to recommend, this is my favorite. This story made me understand why I believe in God, but it's certainly not going to catch you until you turn the last page and digest the book over a sip of coffee.

Felix Albert felixpena — We join our perfect, immortal couple once more in the second book of The Immortals series, Blue Moon. Ever and her powers are growing stronger everyday now, with the help of her lover and teacher Damen. Everything seems to be going right finally for Ever, until the new kid comes to town: Roman. Roman is good looking, friendly, smart, and has the cutest accent ever; but something about him to Ever doesn't feel right. As time goes on at high school, things begin to take a turn for the worse. Ever starts to notice changes going on, like suddenly people are friends with everyone and Damen is different. Not the different that she fell in love with, but the different that makes him like all the other high school boys. He doesn't look at her the same way anymore, pretends he doesn't know who she is, and is hanging out with the malkin Stacia. Putting all the pieces together, Ever realises that all these happenings may be the cause of the new guy. Eventually, time begins to run out and even fate can be changed. Number of pages: 284

Hanna Ländin hannalandin — Dear God, this man is incredible. For would-be investors, Buffett offers some practical insights and lessons you will not easily forget: research matters, management matters more, and there's no reason not to take a big bet on something that you trust. But perhaps the more important lesson from this book is for those career hoppers and ne'er-do-wells who remain constantly uncertain what they want to do when they grow up.... Buffett works his tail off at everything he does, with a single-minded focus that is awe-inspiring. He's not greedy, but rather infused with a sense that every dollar should be spent trying to earn more dollars -- and that is his sole mission in life, something he's very good at, and something he enjoys tremendously. When you find something like this, go after it! (I think mine might involve reading books)
