** spoiler alert ** I'm not sure why I feel that this is one of my new favorites but I'll try. Ella Varner is a gossip columnist that is living with her environmentally aware, comfortable boyfriend when she receives a call from her Mother that she has secluded herself from. Mom tells her that her little sister has just had a baby, that neither one of them knew about, and has just dumped said baby on Mom. Ella has to head for Houston and take over the duties of the baby or Mom is going to turn the baby over to Foster Care. When Ella gets there her Mother immediately gives all responsibility over. Ella is faced with taking care of an infant and trying to find her sister. Once she has talked to her cousin, that was sharing an apartment with her sister, she is given a name of a man that could possibly be the baby's Father. So she head to see him to confront him with taking a DNA test to determine Paternity. Jack Travis is a man born with money, but has worked hard to earn his own place in the world. He loves women and has dated and bedded many. When a impertinent woman with a baby shows up on his office wanting a meeting, he is intrigued. But when she suggests that he could be the baby's Father, he out and out tells her that she is barking up the wrong tree. He didn't sleep with her sister. But agrees to take the test to get rid of her, and to maybe get to know her. While Ella is searching for the truth about the paternity of the baby, she finds out a few about herself. And Jack Travis is there to help along the way. I liked that there was humor in their relationship in this book. You don't always find that in romance books. This is such a sweet story of self discovery and love that I will be reading this again and again. Definitely giving this one 5 out of 5 stars!

Part mystery, part supernatural thriller, this book takes place in a small town in eastern Kentucky where an eccentric inhabitant has built a light house on a ridge, no where near any navigable waters. Great cast of eccentric but believable characters, including the sheriff who investigates when the light house keeper dies, the newspaper reporter who is unemployed after the town's only newspaper shuts down, and the owner of a big cat rescue sanctuary, who moves her tigers, lions, leopards and cougars to the light house ridge just as things get interesting.

Milan Kundera's digressions come across as masturbatory sometimes, but this was a rewarding read in spite of itself. He approaches his characters and their mythologies playfully, and while occasionally dips into the maudlin or the silly, his fluid approach also breeds deep empathy and some really transcendent insights.

I loved the first half - it's a bit Marquez-like (Desdemona reminds me so much of Ursula in One Hundred Years of Solitude), up-tempo, and riveting. As the story progressed to Cali's school and her love affair with the Object, I began to get weary of the story for some reason. It's a really good book though; I just found the last parts not as fascinating as the first half.

While the plot is good, I find the book a bit lengthy.. Huge books are great only if they're able to keep a constant grip on reader. That's not the case with Cryptonomicon. Book through the different areas like cryptography, hacking, scuba diving, digging, and war.. And I found it hard to keep up at it. Obviously liked a cryptography and hacking part of it because I'm in that profession.. But stories just made first 50-60% boring. Frankly, Its a good book, but I don't think its worth a month of reading.. (Yes it took me more than a month to finish this book)

Jeffrey Deaver has really stepped up his game with this novel. If you would like a character-driven twisty-turny good read, I highly recommend this. What seems to start out as a run of the mill police call turns into a marathon of gut wrenching hide and seek.Just when you think you have things figured out, Deaver pulls the rug out from under you. Don't miss this really great book. I'm hoping for these characters to come back in a second book to start a series.
