Benjamin Dussud _oen69160 — Saw this in the stacks today, as I climbed up to my new office. I did not know it existed, so was very pleased to spend a few moments with it. This is a bunch of verse from the Red Book of Westmarch (a fictional book of verse and whatnot that hobbits read in Tolkien land). Charming and magical and nice to discover more stuff from that world. (P.S. the copy in the stacks is a first edition - the art is pretty great--not what Goodreads shows, but that's neat, too.)

Suzette Snyman _nyman — I would recommend this book to almost anyone! The sequel to The Golden Compass, this book carries on where it left off. Many new charachters are introduced, and there are exciting adventures. The only complaint that I have about this book is that sometimes Pullman's writing can be a little heavy and hard to get through, but for the most part this is an excellent book. You should read this if you liked A Wrinkle in Time. It's even better!

marvindorod7ec
Marvin Dorosan marvindorod7ec — The only thing that kept me reading this book was I wanted to find out what the big finale LeMerle had planned was. Other than that I found this book a waste of time. I didn't feel there was any substance to it, the characters seemed half-developed and thrown in there, and the mini-mystery was the only thing that kept the book flowing. Harris's writing was gorgeous, mind you, but a little too much at times. In she writes in sort of a braggart manner, showing off her abilities with words. It's nice at first, but grows old fast. There was something else missing with this book that I can't quite put my finger on. I don't know what it is, but what ever was missing was something that kept me drawn into the book. This was one of those books, while I followed it, I just never got into it. I would be easily distracted with it, and I found myself frequently putting the book down. It's not "a book you can't put down." Quite the opposite. Either way, like I always say, give this book a try. The above is solely my opinion and I always advise people to open there minds and if a book sounds interesting, despite what others may say, read the book, you may find you really like it.

Filiz Avsar avsarf — Now I realised how bad amnesia could affect someone. Another story from Jennifer Echols and another day of hangover, that happens everytime I picked out her book, I wouldn't stop until I finish the last words and know what happen to the characters. Zoey had a car wreck, only to find she couldn't remember anything from the crash! Only that both her car and Mike's car swerved simultaneously to avoid crashing into a deer. The crash totalled their cars, she hit her head pretty hard and apparently Doug, who asked her to homecoming in seventh grade and now was totally distant from her broke his leg because he was involved in the crash too. Jennifer Echols has a way with writing stories, she made teenagers seemed deep and complicated, unlike the typical dramatic teenagers we read about in chick lit books. Everytime I pick up one of her books, I feel very matured after I finished it. First starting with Going too far, then Love story, and now Forget you. Cliche titles, but do not judge a book by its name. Jennifer Echols produces one of the most memorable books I've read in my lifetime. I fell in love with Doug, despite how much of an ass he could be with his sarcasm and bluntness (though I love sarcasm), he showed compassion and affection and understanding I'm not sure a guy is capable of. He might not say it out loud, but he certainly proved it. From commanding to threatening, Doug certainly has a unique way to show his affection towards Zoey, and I love him for that. Zoey, thank God she's not a whiny girl character. I enjoyed reading from her POV, and to get to know her from her struggles and mixed emotion, I feel like she is crazy after all! But I admire her strength in facing her problems (or rather ignoring it:P) and for the fact that she tried to keep up a charade made me love her more. She don't go spilling secrets to anyone! However, I do get annoyed at how repitiously she reaffirmed her status as Brandon's girlfriend, although they only had sex once! And I do not read anything that confirms it so I was puzzled why she would think so. The story progresses pefectly, each character faces their own dilemma. Zoey with her crazy mum and cheater dad, Doug with his abusive/manipulative father, I was really emotionally touched by the characters. And I do feel a certain connection to them. Which I need to mention, Cody aka Officer Fox reminded me of John After from Going too far. Yet, as much as I am so touched by the ending, I felt like there are things that were left unresolved. And these are the questions that continue to linger in my head: 1. What happen to Zoey's dad and wife? 2. So does that mean that Zoey's mum had won the custody over Zoey? 3. Did Lila get back together with Mike? Overall, a story I would choose for a night of emotional reading.

_oland_ischofberger
Roland Bischofberger _oland_ischofberger — After reading accounts of Sartre's highly unpleasant experiences with the then-infant compound LSD, this book made more sense on the whole, though taken as an independent perspective of one man's interior world (and a fictional world at that, severed from the corresponding reality of the author) I found it illuminating and full of abstract though vivid imagery. I read it in conjunction with a class on Existentialism while living in Copenhagen, so the atmosphere provided certain nuances to the experience of reading the book, I'm sure. I'm torn on Sartre's conclusion - is the impending 'invasion' of the vines and other converging plantlife about the town a cause for fear or celebtation, or neither, and instead the breaking point at which freedom from futility is fully realized?
