Vikas Beloshe _hoenix360 — "Saving Sweetness" is an adorable book. This book would be perfect for a read-aloud scenario where students try to listen and name all the times they hear metaphors, similies, personification and hyperboles. Students will enjoy having this book read to them because it is funny and has an exciting plot.

Pang Yolanda yolanda_pang — I discovered this book on an "American Chocolate Week" display at my local library and knew that I had to read this book. In my world, chocolate is the most important food group and I, like author Steve Almond, eat a piece of candy each day. Unfortunately for me, I do not have his super fast metabolism. I loved the book for its originality, use of words like behemoth, and for introducing me to the "chocolate underbelly of America." I now have a desire to buy locally made chocolate from lesser known brands as a way to support small businesses who cannot pay $25,000 rack fees for 'real estate' space in retail grocers and department store chains like the big three candy companies can. I also wish that I was born earlier so I could have witnessed more of the glorious candy making history Steve Almond details throughout this book. I'm also in love with the idea of traveling to candy companies, touring their headquarters and factory floors, then writing about it, but alas, this has already been done. This writer must find her own underbelly to write about. I hated Steve Almond's whiny and random autobiographical antidotes. Sure, they explained his obsession and "freakishness" about candy (and to a point, we as readers do need to know why the author chose his topic), but they were placed in the wrong places and often ruined my flow. I had to step back from the text and regroup before continuing on. I don't like it when I have to do that. It's bad enough life interrupts our reading; I don't need the author doing it to me too. And what's the deal with the self-diagnosis of cancer? He never did wrap up that lose end...but I'm kinda glad about that because I don't think I could handle another reference to him playing with himself.

Nichole Yeow maikokawas6652 — I have a real problem with that Ruby. My five year old daughter has been bringing up - for over a year - some problems she has. She's bossy, she doesn't share, she has to have everything her way or else, she talks down to her brother, and that's just to name a few. My kid actually noticed this without any prodding. Anyway, she bugs me. I feel for dirty little Max. I wish Ruby would see a therapist and work out her problems. Anyhoo, this is the cartoon put to paper. If your child likes the cartoon and likes to read - he or she will like this. Sadly, Julia is moving away from this sort of cartoon and heading towards that icky icarly and the like. Very sad, I know. Heartbreaking really. I'd take Ruby and her mental problem(s) over icarly any day. :(
