Reham Musallam rehammusalab23 — One of the few books out there about transgender issues. While I thought that the flashbacks could have been done a lot better and they broke the flow of the book, I enjoyed it overall. A very interesting read.

Porsha M _onquer_reate — This should be bundled as a companion with Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal . In the intro to Oranges, Winterson writes, "Is this book autobiographical? No not at all and yes of course." It was really fascinating to read it right after finishing Why Be Happy and see all the autobio peeping out. The same anecdotes gussied up and polished, the same hopes carved into a different shape, the same pain painted over but still recognizable. It gives such a fuller understanding of Winterson, and of her creative nimbleness. This book was also much more slippery than I remembered, with the fables and allusions braided through. It makes me want to reread The Once and Future King. And much more Winterson, of course.

Debbah Fouad fouaddebbafa9a — So well done. Every one of Geraldine Brooks's books is so different from the others, and every one seems to have been thoroughly researched so that the reader learns a good bit while absorbing a piece of fiction. Living, as I do, near Martha's Vineyard, I was particularly fascinated by the depiction of the earliest English settlers and the Wampanoags who preceded them on the island.

Rina Yu rinau — I am a huge fan of the Ethshar series. The secret to this series is that it's originally based on the author's RPG world, which grew in complexity until it was no longer feasible to actually run an RPG in it. Most of the books focus on some aspect of his world (in this case, the power known as "warlockry"); they describe how it meshes with the rest of the world, and the forces keeping it in balance. Characterization is not one of Lawrence Watt-Evans's strengths, but he more than makes up with it in grand, sweeping ideas.

Facundo Azuaga facundoazuaga — I found this 1957, former Bookmobile copy of Great American Negroes stored in a trunk in my mother's garage. The various stories of those profiled are quite interesting. The reader is given an in-depth view of key factors and milestones in the lives of such greats as Louis Armstrong, Marian Andersen, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, James Weldon Johnson, Ralph Bunche, Dorie Miller, and a host of other great African Americans who excelled in the fields of music, the theater, art, literature, education, the church, civic leadership, science, sports, and the military.
