The Artemis Fowl series is back to the high standards I’ve come to expect of it. This was another re-read so this came as no surprise to me, however the final two books in the series will be new reads for me, so I’m hoping the series goes out on just as much of a high as this book. After the awkwardly misjudged character of Minerva Paradizo in the last book, the series really recovers its wings here, as we get back to Artemis and his fairy friends doing what they do best, going on a high-risk adventure of epic proportions. With each book in this series it manages to pull off the remarkable feat of topping the stakes of the previous entry. That’s an achievement that cannot be said of many series. This time Artemis is facing his toughest opponent yet – himself – and just when you thought that was tough enough Colfer throws in a huge twist that ups the stakes even more. Just when you thought you were on the edge of your seat, you’re thrown a curveball that has you positively teetering off the edge. As per usual the book is crammed full of action and there’s never a dull moment. What’s more this book pulls an Eternity Code and leaves us on a huge cliffhanger, although the main thread of the plot is self-contained and resolved in a deeply satisfying way. Watch out for the complex plot on this one though; the title of this book really does do what it says on the tin and you may find yourself re-reading certain passages towards the end to make sure you’ve got what’s going on. I also remember the satisfaction of vindication when I first read this book. Not so much as a mention of Minerva Paradizo, and the hints of Artemis/Holly in previous books now undeniably blossomed here. The sparks are flying and this time they ain’t magical. This subtext just became a ship. And as someone who appreciates a well-crafted relationship based on a dynamic built up slowly and carefully over time and books, I have to appreciate the fruition of this one, even if Artemis blows it – I have a feeling this won’t be the end of Artemis/Holly. One thing's for sure - with a cliffhanger this size there's going to be plenty of action and adventure in the next book. 9 out of 10

Fabulous book! Lots of hardships for the H&h and definitely had some choke up/ teary moments for me. The book is about a wagon trail heading to Texas and is set back in early America after the Civil War has ended. The hero, Ross and the heroine, Lydia, are in parallel situations. An almost dead Lydia is found by some young boys laying in the woods after she had just given birth to a baby boy (which I think was strangled by its umbilical cord). She wants to die because of the cruel life she is living and is glad the baby isn't being brought into it. She is saved by a wonderful family. Meanwhile Ma, the mother of Lydia's saving family, a day later is called away to deliver Ross and his upper class wife, Victoria's, baby. Victoria dies in childbirth, but Ross's son, Lee, lives. Ross is devastated by his wife's passing and when Lydia is presented to Ross as a wet nurse to save Lee, Ross hates and resents her and says vicious things. He thinks she is a prostitute, since she doesn't have a husband, and wants her nowhere near Lee or himself. Lydia is described beautifully and I just loved her. She was an innocent temptest (not sure if this is a word, might have made it up) with all the right alluring parts and Ross hated her because she distracted him from his perfect wife's memory. Ross had a sordid past as well and the dead Victoria made him respectable by marrying him and bringing him into her upper class world. I also loved Lydia because she stood her ground against Ross's insults and bad tempers, loved his son, and didn't try to take over Victoria's position in Ross's heart. She did it naturally and became loved by everyone. Lots of meat to this story and many crisscrosses. There were so many rich secondary characters and even though Ross was a hurtful, horrible jerk through half the book I respected him for his honorable and loyal ways. Good side stories and BAD villains too. Very fulfilling read!

I had to read this book for one of my literature classes, and I have come to appreciate its merit. However, it's like drinking cough syrup; it makes you feel slightly woozy, and it may smell alright, but it tastes bad. In short, this book incites discomfort and confusion as it parallels the apartheid in South Africa. The dissatisfaction I felt as a reader is part of the ironic intention the author wished to propel. There is no solid plot line, and the main characters are unclear. Many plot points were introduced but never answered. The ironic slant did, however, create conversation about power structures and they way they function. Foe achieves this by creating a resistance between the reader and the novel's form.

** spoiler alert ** A bit slow but enjoyable. It continues after where Hunted left off. Zoey is having trouble with her being a reincarnation of A-ya. Zoey feels an attraction to Kalona and struggles to fight it and like usual she has boy problems. She has an imprint Heath, a warrior bond with Stark and her boyfriend Erik and on top of it her attraction to Kalona. Just utter chaos! Well she ends up breaking up with Erik and sort of dates Heath although she feels that Stark is more than a friend to her. The ending disappoints me because it's a frkn cliffhanger ending! D< But Heath dies and I was like HAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHHAHA because I don't like him. Hehehe. And Zoey's spirit has drifted off and just her body (shell) is left lying on earth. Well interesting as it switched from Zoey's POV into many people's. Really liked it overall though. :D

Given that this book was coming from the National Geographic Society, I was looking forward to high quality photos and "just the facts, ma'am" commentary. And, I suppose, if you're a "secular humanist", that's exactly what you'll think you're getting starting with a LOT of speculation about the development of prehistoric human culture. If you're a Christian like me, though, what you'll get is a slanted view of human history that shamelessly downplays the significance of Judeo-Christian events which have shaped our world and common human culture. The life and death of Jesus of Nazareth is covered in a single paragraph with a pretty Courier & Ives picture to illustrate. Islam's Muhammad, on the other hand, is given an entire sidebar which includes this incredible statement: "Christians and Jews--both followers of the one God, Allah--were prospering on the Arabian Peninsula..." This is false. Christians have never followed Allah. Three more paragraphs are captioned "Muhammad Flees" and a two page spread is devoted to The Dome of the Rock. Martin Luther the Reformer is given a couple of paragraphs while Mahatma Gandhi is allotted several entries. I could go on citing the disparity between how the contributions of Christianity are presented or ignored when compared to all other world religions but I won't. Suffice to say, while this "history" may resonate with those who share the opinions of the book's contributors, between the glaring errors (like the one I cited above) and the painfully obvious slant, this book didn't provide the kind of balanced insights into the events that have shaped our world that I expect from a history book.

Bunun biraz preachy olduğunu düşündüm ama okumaktan zevk aldım. Yine de cheesemaking'in nasıl yapıldığını araştıracağım. Bu noktada "yerel" alışverişim HyVee, Coop ve Fareway'i içeriyor.
