Marco Fernandez marcofernandez — 3.5 stars. A fun, easy read. The nostalgia was a blast - seeing the games and movies from my childhood feature as plot points. However, I felt like the particular items chosen for the puzzles were too easy - they were many of the most popular from the 80's. I would have thought that the Halliday would have picked more obscure games and movies if he was obsessive as the book made him out to be, with more research required. A lot of names and titles were dropped, but it felt like it only skimmed the surface of the 80's culture. (And I don't believe for a second that the first clue would have taken 5 years to be solved. I've seen the way a forum community can just tear apart a riddle, puzzle, ARG, etc., or come up with surprisingly correct theories about upcoming fantasy novels or TV shows from the clues already given. Crowdsourcing is amazingly affective.) Lastly, the writing style - I felt "talked down" to by the author, who over-explained certain terms or the way things worked way too much. Are the people who read this book really not going to know what XP stands for? Maybe it's because I am firmly in the book's demographic (grew up in the 80's, geek by nature) but this is what kept it from getting a full 4 stars for me. Still worth reading - the phrase I'm stealing from another review is "the literary equivalent of a summer popcorn blockbuster."

Phạm Hương cobonla7887d0 — Wow. Just wow. Did I say wow already? The best book I've read so far this year, without reservation. Let me elaborate, because I think it's necessary. I don't usually read Contemporary Romance. It's just not my thing. They are formulaic and boring to me. This is not that book. The characters are deep and damaged. The pain that haunts Michael leaps off the pages and wrenches the heart. Honestly, I've never read so much of a book with tears in my eyes. If there is any downside to this book, it's that if you are extremely sensitive it might be too much for you. I'm not kidding, it hurts that much. However, following along while they conquer the hurdles is a wonderful experience that is worth every moment of sniffling. Deidre Knight writes characters unlike any I've met in a long while. An absolutely amazing book that gives you an emotional ride you won't soon forget.

Hiliass Kamara hiliasskamc92b — I was very disappointed with this book after hearing from so many people who love this author. I thought the writing was terrible - amateurish even. Her use of the language leaves much to be desired. I was honestly angered by the ending... I felt it was such a cop out, it made the entire book seem like a waste of time.
