The first fifty or so pages were a little sluggish for me, but once the book started to get into the swing of things, I finished it pretty quickly. Alexia, at times, really got on my nerves. A couple of examples follow: (a) Her constant comments on her figure and lineage; for someone who generally doesn't care what others think, she spends more than necessary time criticizing her unfashionable looks and (b) The way she criticizes every aspect of Ivy Hisselpenny. It seems like a friendship of convenience. If she's supposed to be Alexia's closest friend (especially with all she confides in Ivy), one would think that she wouldn't treat Ivy as a doormat. Another thing about the book is the many blatant stereotypes that appear in many historical romance mysteries: the insipid, shallow stepsisters and mother; the complacent father figure; the flamboyant friend; the independent to a fault, bookish heroine; the undesirable suitor; and the handsome, rakish hero (who has a Holmes/Watson relationship with his Beta). Everyone falls into place as in theatrics. I also found the book to be predictable. I'm not the type of person predicts occurrences in a book, so when I say a book is predictable, it is REALLY predictable. I did think the element of science involved in the novel was refreshing, and as much as I may complain about stereotypes, I really liked the male characters. Despite myself, I loved the Maccon and Lyall relationships, and Floote, Alexia's butler, was one of those characters that I found to be really funny in all his properness. It's also interesting to see supernatural society integrated into the mainstream during the Victorian era. I really liked how there was a social structure and policing system of the supes in England and the supernatural rights theme. All in all, this was a fun read, and I will definitely will continue with the series.

I was very disappointed with this book after hearing from so many people who love this author. I thought the writing was terrible - amateurish even. Her use of the language leaves much to be desired. I was honestly angered by the ending... I felt it was such a cop out, it made the entire book seem like a waste of time.

At first I thought it would be too science fiction for my liking, but it's really more of a love story that transcends time and space. I loved the writing style and found it an easy read - the characters are easy to relate to and it's set in Chicago for those who love that city. I definitely recommend it!
