Anna Romanovskaya _om_skaya — Sent to me by Molyneux when I complained of a paucity of good books. Finished this today and still digesting it. Interesting psychological study, wrapped up in a story of intertwined lives. The catalyst is the death of Marina Proudfoot, and covers a span of roughly 45 years. Marina, and love for Marina is a driving force for at least two other characters: her troubled son Timothy and her lover of many years, Father Ewan McEwan. Interlaced in the tale are other lives and loves of these three individuals. Cavanagh explores a broad range of passions (for it is said that hate is actually closer to love and sometimes even stronger) for the individuals in her story. While the story did indeed draw me in, I was perhaps not as captivated by it as some other readers have been. It had the right elements of a good yarn, but the telling was a little flat for me. (It's a problem I find in my own prose as well -- I want the reader to feel as if Laurence Olivier is reading my story to them, but it comes across as if read by a decent enough actor, but not Sir Laurence.) This did not keep me from reading the book, from cover to cover in less than 24 hours, but did leave me feeling a little cheated in the end. I also came away feeling incredibly sad for all the characters, except for maybe Roger who is a total toad and got off too good in the end, in my opinion. I liked the mechanism of telling Marina's story from beyond the grave via a document she leaves, but did feel at sixes and sevens as to how that all was handled at the end. (Don't want to say more for fear of a spoiler.) Father Ewan was an interesting character, and while the subtitle of this story is "the Priest's Tale", I felt it more to be Marina's story. I don't think my dissatisfaction comes from the fact that I am Roman Catholic, for I fear I am more at odds with Catholic doctrine than my priest would care to hear. But I am unsettled by this and will need to think more about why. If I come to any conclusions, I'll report back. Still, I am quite happy to have read it. I think I have another Cavanagh book languishing on the shelves and will need to dig that out to read.
