André Luiz andreguidolin — [Re-read in March 2016] I re-read all my FLB books this month, and without fail they all lost at least three stars off their ratings. Some books you can enjoy as a teenager and an adult. Not so with FLB's oeuvre, I'm afraid. I can't work out why I gave this one 4 stars to begin with, when I seem to remember not even enjoying it ten years ago...

Simon Priestley simon_priestley — ** spoiler alert ** Mrs. Bugs is killed tragically and accidentally by Ian while she was trying to retrieve the French Man's Gold. Arch Bugs her husband is grieve taken and swore vengeance by killing Ian's future wife paramour ? If he will ever have one. Ian is paranoid and it doesn't make matters any better when he falls for a Quaker named Rachel who Arch Bugs tries to kill/murder on more than one occasion and eventually fail. I find it impossible that Arch Bug who is Old and isn't in a good state of health isn't dying and still looming about trying to murder people with his ax. Has anyone noticed how so suddenly his character changed ? He was this sensible, quite and tolerable Old man and when his Gold connections is reviled he just went through an entire character switch ? And is now a complete nut head. Plus, what is it 'bout him protecting the gold from Jocasta Cameron or her husband ? I mean he is doing just as they were wasn't he also trying to steal the Gold away ? Give me a Break ! Roger and Brianna are back in the 20th Century Lallybroch with their kids but they are still hunted by their past emotionally and psychologically that is until their past gets materialized in the form or Bucceligh Mackenzie. My first thought was, what the heck is this dude doing here ? We finally know how he came to be in the 20th Century and specifically in Lallybroch but ones keeps wondering how did he TT to the future and not to any other time ? If the stones are supposed to be connected to one's brains and if they were bound to take you 200 years backwards, wasn't Bucceligh supposed to go 200 years back instead of 200 years forward ? and who was he thinking about when he stepped into the stones ? Surely not Roger ! Now, I'm really confused. I guess there is an exception to each rule but here is my thought the chart shows that he died at 30 years old which is his current age could it be possible that he didn't die but disappeared and went to the future and his family thought he was dead so that's how his life presumedly ended ? All things are possible maybe if he went back the charts would change. About Cameron plot twist and how he kidnapped Jem just to get the Gold. It's in another Continent for God's sake and was there for 200+ years. So, what he's supposed to go all the way to NC to a mine that may or may not exist anymore ? Just plain inconvenient and how is he even sure that *There* is Gold anymore ? Maybe Roger or Bree just made it all up ? Maybe it's a myth ? Why would he risk everything for it unless he is the recreation of Hector Cameron or another Time Traveller ? I was hoping that bit is resolved in this book but No, no such thing. William & Lord John are both dry and boring in this book. I liked John as a minor character and I always thought William was a total bully to the people below him. Neither came across as interesting in this novel. All what William does is wander around, flirt with the ladies and be ungrateful to Ian as he saved his life. I even seized to feel sorry for him when he got hit by Arch Bug's ax. Those two characters were easily the most boring in the entire book they even made Roger & Bree's parts looks interesting and I hate Bree. Why would Claire sleep with Lord John ? I understand the need to use the *gasp* shock factor but really was that even necessary ? it seized being shocking two books ago. I was shocked when Claire slept with the King of France, I was shocked when Jamie slept with Geneva and I was shocked when he married Loaghaire and while all those made some sense this one simply didn't. An unnecessary plot twist that I could've done without. I also don't see the depth or the meaning behind it other than creating false drama. Jenny is another person I personally don't want to hear more about. I liked her enough in the first two books but then in Voyager she came across as bad tempered and cranky all the time. As well as Overprotective. Protecting Jamie from Claire in Voyager ? Come On ! He's a grown man for God's sake not some baby and now blaming Claire for not helping her husband and even going as far as accusing her that she's the reason he ever contracted the illness ? Like it's Claire who told the English officers to take Ian and bring him to the cells so he can contract the cough and die 30 years later. Totally unreasonable and illogical I understand her husband is dying but was that really necessary ? It made me so frustrated. This book as a whole was frustrating and knowing the ending or lack of it doesn't help. Almost all the characters seemed forced to do things that are out of their character and things they wouldn't do if they were real people. The Only plot line that was interesting enough was Bree and Roger and Jem. Although that was at the very end and it'll leave you cliff hanging. Also, it is fair to say that DG has totally sacrificed her story/plot/characters for the sake of Historical research. That isn't the reason people read these books. For me nothing could outshine the splendor of the first two books. ABOSAA was a good read but still the first two are solid. Even Voyager was Not so bad it had it's heartwarming moments. Drums of Autumn was good up till Bree/Stephen Bonnet issue. The FC was cramming of details it was impossible. Even the villains I noticed are becoming more and more ridicules by the book as well as less memorable. Stephen Bonnet a drunk Pirate who doesn't seem to think outside his animalistic needs of murder, rape, sleep, food etc... The Two Brothers in ABOSAA which I totally forget their names who seem like Hooligans nonetheless with no intellectual depth to recommend them and Now Arch Bug ? The man has a wit of a fish. Cameron is a total jerk if you asked me that Bree should've just kept away from. I miss Old time Villains who were despite their evilness somehow memorable EARLY Gillies Duncan she was too crazy in Voyager, Dougal & Colum Mackenzie, Duke of Sandrigham and yes even Black Jack Randall. Those all were complex characters with some target in mind. I will still buy the next book because I invested too much time and effort into this series and hopefully it'll come across as good as the first two books. I'm Hoping more story and less History.
