Ayse Simer aysesimer051f — The idea of the proliferation and amplification of intelligence as the purpose of the universe (and correlatively the "meaning of life" I guess) is something that makes sense in an incredibly profound way. I think this will ultimately be Kurzweil's legacy, as it is a concept that is at once observable and based on empiricism (and this is where the strength of this book lies: in its sobriety and reliance on evidence), but also is entirely in harmony with the problems of mortality and the unknown with which all humans struggle, and is thus very comforting. The idea of the symbiotic human intelligence as assuming the godly characteristics of omniscience and omnipotence is extremely poetic. All this time we should have been sacrificing goats to ourselves. He does get caught up in the implications of statistical trends though, perhaps combined with his own desire to reconcile his sorrow at the death of his father and desire to bring him back from the dead (something he has stated he wants to do). His predictions of us just having to make it to the year 2045 and then we will all live forever unfortunately ruin his credibility. But hey, I'll be the first to apologize if he's right. Like Bill Murray said, "I'm not THE God, but I'm A god."

Denis Vinokurov vinarts — This book sparkled from the first sentence. I admit I had my doubt about a vampire in his blood lust and a ghost but Ms. Kresley Cole made it work and did it beautifully. Conrad was was a hero to die for. His passion mixed with his innocence, his intelligence and his need to protect Néomi at all costs. How can I not fall for this man? By the end of the book I was like : " Back off, Néomi you small little useless ballerina. I am so taking your man and we will be married by tomorrow morning... I mean night, cause he is vampire ( duh, obviously! )" And since I am an unashamed lover of virgin male heroes in my eyes Conrad just got a little bit more perfect. If that is actually possible? The only other time that I felt this connection with a hero was when I read Untouched by Anna Campbell. How can I not love the virgin male heroes when they are the best lovers, in books that is. They are all passionate innocence and wish to make every moment special for their mate *I'm jealous once again* Still even as I sigh and drool, and sigh, and then drool some more over Conrad if it was just him Dark Needs at Night's Edge would most probably not make it to the 5 stars I give so rarely. Néomi, too was an amazing and I loved the fact that she is not ashamed of herself and the things she did. And the fact that she is open minded about her sex life help Conrad to not be ashamed of his untouched state. But the most important thing is though he and Néomi were both wonderful characters, the author managed to make me loved them as a couple too. Ms. Cole managed to make me believe in their future together and to suffer when they do. Dark Needs at Night's Edge definitely made it to my top 10 of this year and because of it I have set my sights on the series and will most probably read all the other books soon enough.
