this book scarred itself into my brain permanently after reading. Its take on human nature upset me at the time, I now try to keep my eye on who is holding the conch and what is happening to the piggys of the world. for a long time, I could not figure out why the school curriculum contained such depressing negative books - now I realize why. Just as I remember 3/4s of the class just not getting it. that is all reflected in our society.

Ok, I dont know why I put the book the place I did. I enjoyed this book a lot, I've recommended it to many people, I've reread it about 5 times. Its a powerful book, you have to be willing to accept what its saying though or else you will think its bull. And to think, I had randomly picked up this book cause I couldnt find a place to sit in a coffee shop.

This book was over-hyped. I can recognize that the writing is fresh and the point of view is (mostly) new. I just don't think that the stories of the characters does the immigrant expeience justice. I actually have not yet read any immlit that I feel can approximate the total feeling of disconnection with any given culture without succumbing to cliches.
