This book gives an insight into how the Lincoln family may have been. There was so much tragedy in their family but there was joy also. It was a very quick read.

Reading David T. Dellinger is like reading the works Mohandas Gandhi addressed to Anglo-Americans regarding his pacifist philosophy. Although sympathetic to many revolutionary movements utilizing physical force to achieve humane ends, both maintain that soul force is superior. As a young man, very concerned about and opposed to the United States' invasion of Vietnam, but very uncomfortable with hurting anyone, I found their arguments to be of great interest and went so far as to join The War Resister's League and subscribe to Liberation magazine. I probably saw Dave several times both in Washington, D.C. during the two demonstrations I attended there against the Vietnam war and in Chicago during the 1968 Democratic National Convention and during the demonstrations that followed during the Conspiracy Trial, but never actually was introduced to him. The only defendants I knew personally were Froines and Weiner, the two academics of the lot. Years after reading this book, needing shelf space, I divested myself of paperbacks. This title ended up at the Book Nook in Sawyer, Michigan.

The beginning seemed a trifle unbelievable, even viewing from the perspective a a 4-8 year old. But the writing was wicked funny in places (especially the chapter about the shrink). But the end made the book well worth the read. It seemed quite real, and not funny.

Before I share my thoughts on Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun, I want to dispel a concern some people may have that Madre might be inaccessible. On the contrary! Ms. Bakewell does a beautiful job of making her subject clear and easy to follow. Even if you’re new to the study of language, you’ll learn from and enjoy what Ms. Bakewell has to say. She is an academic, certainly, but she is also a gifted writer, and Madre is a pleasure to read. Her vivid descriptions of life in Mexico, her wordplay, and her light touch of humor combine to make Madre as engaging as it is interesting. Ms. Bakewell’s journey with madre is, indeed, a fascinating one. Each time I thought she’d run out of angles from which to study the elusive noun, she’d introduce yet another factor that contributed in some way to madre’s contemporary meaning. It would be difficult to examine the word for “mother” without also examining the role of women, and Ms. Bakewell does so: as speakers of the language, as brides, as historical and Biblical figures, and, of course, as mothers. Masculine and feminine exist even in the Spanish language itself. If your curiosity is piqued by language, if you enjoy diving into other cultures, if you’re interested in gender studies, or if you like memoirs that teach while they transport, I would absolutely recommend Madre: Perilous Journeys with a Spanish Noun by Liza Bakewell to you. My full review is posted on my blog, Erin Reads.

"'How long will you keep me?' I asked. You shrugged. 'Forever, of course.'" What starts out as a cute encounter with a boy in an airport coffee shop ends with Gemma stranded in the middle of no where. No where being an endless desert with no signs of humanity. That is aside from her kidnapper Tyler. Kidnapped and taken against her will, Tyler has it in his mind to keep her with him forever. Gemma has other plans.Written in letter format, Gemma written to her biggest fear: Tyler. Personally, I could have cared less for the book. I did not hate it, but I did not love it either. I think the letter format threw me off for half of the book, and I could not connect or emphasize with Gemma. The emotional factor did not kick in for me to really get into the book. There were good parts of the book that increased my reading pace and others that forced me to put it back down. Overall, the book was okay, but it was not anything I would rave about. As a teaching tool, some of the language would not be appropriate. For example, the "eff" word was occasionally popular with Tyler. There was also instances of content that could be questionable. (I do not want to list it for spoiler problems.) However, it would do a good job to showing a different type of genre (letter) and a strong first person narration.

This was quick fun read, but way too reminiscent of Rebecca to be really interesting. The additional mystery within a mystery was also ridiculously predictable. Fine for fluff but I was expecting more.
