Edwin Neuto neutinhophotograph — Bead and Button Magazine's newest installment in their Creative Beading series lives up to the standard set by the magazine and the previous volumes. The books collect the best projects of the year in a hard cover format. The advantage to having them in a single volume is that it's easy to find that project you just love. The short introduction has basic information and covers various techniques, so if you need a refresher, it's there. Then into the projects. This one leans heavily towards seed bead projects. Shapes were a heavy theme last year, so very few of them are pictorial. They are mostly sculptural, wearable art. Elegant, dainty, fun, industrial, geometric, and big statement pieces are all included. You'll learn ways to curve, twist and form shapes using different stitches. Many of the projects use familiar stitches in new and exciting ways. Such as the 5 pointed star that's made using a variation of the St. Petersburg Chain. Some use unexpected elements or supplies, such as the Arctic Cuff which uses a head cut off a toy to create a polar bear that seems to be coming out of the bracelet . One of my favorite pieces in the whole book is one of the simplest, it's an industrial looking bracelet made in peyote stitch using hex nuts. It's one of those projects that could encourage young men to learn to bead and it's very wearable by men or women. Bead Intuitive uses several techniques to create a beaded bead necklace that looks like a lampwork art bead on a cord. It's intricate and challenging with lots of room for interpretation. Get to the Point is a really neat looking daisy chain variation that in the right colors would be wearable with anything. It's sparkling and delicate with an edge provided by dagger beads. There are a lot of projects, and I could write about most of them. Which would make this a really long review. So I'll skip to the wire working part of the book. The wirework chapter is pretty short, but it also has some great projects. My hands down favorite is the Paisley Perfection earrings which combine great shapes with beads to make lovely motifs. The project that looks the most fun to me is the Keshi cuff which is a frame that is heavily embellished with pearls. I really recommend this if you're a fan of the magazine and love seed beads.

Pía Grassi piagrassi — huh...I don't really know how to review this book. I thought the writing was pretty good...although I feel like I was always waiting for something to happen, and rarely did something happen. I really disliked the main woman character, and had a hard time understanding anything about her. She left her children and husband for real burning love. It made me furious with her and I think it ruined her life. I can't think of anything that would make me leave my children...she just up and left. Something is wrong with her. The story is based upon two real life characters that did actually love each other and run away together...it is a pretty tragic story...and in the end just left me feeling sad.

Alejandro Gallego alejandrogallego — Well, I have to admit I have been unable to actually read this book cover to cover. A significant number of the stories are weak and poorly written. I wll take another run at it and edit this as things change (if they do). Stand-outs include Snake Eyes of Borneo, and most notably Three Minutes of Freedom, by Lara Triback who, for any of you out Oregon ways, will be reading at Powell's bookstore on July 12. In the spirit of full disclosure the author is a good friend of mine, but regardless of the influence of public fealty, it was still the strongest piece of those I read by quite a good stretch. I'm quite interested in the thoughts of folks who've read it without the subjective slant I offer...

Jasper Wolters _75_reations — Bad in a Dostoevsky kind of way, but good in Dostoevsky kind of way too! Except--more like a godless, American Dostoevsky who traded Christian theology for determinism, Darwin, and Freud. Or maybe I just mean that Dreiser can't write, but the story is sort of compelling anyway. PS--Woody Allen stole this plot, like, a couple of times.

Mark Weaver 43_reative — This apparently little-known book is a jewel. Written with passion and incandescant humor, the novel recreates WWII-era Greece (and to a certain extent, the rest of Fascist-occupied Europe at that time) with striking beauty. The characters are unforgettable and nearly all likeable; raw pathos, tragedy, comedy, and romance are fused into one gripping narrative that defies classification. It is, if anything, an effective composition of high Romance and a coming-of-age story: two classic stories in one. But it never takes itself seriously. The story is remarkably erudite, also: historical data is incorporated seamlessly into the story, and the many classic and contemporary references are treated with the same delight as the meat of the story itself. The overall impression of the book is that of a touching, highly entertaining story written by one with a deep love of the people and places. Corelli's Mandolin: A Novel is among my highest-recommended book.
