I like the rhyming in these poems. They definitely help with the flow of the poems. This book is perfect for the kids who love the gruesome. The illustrations remind me a lot of "Corpse Bride" and "Nightmare before Christmas." The topics, too, of course. I didn't look at the illustrations closely, because I am not into the gruesome. On a personal rating, I'd give it a 2 because it's not my thing. But I give it a 3 for knowing its appeal to kids and for the poetry being basically fun and fitting to its subject.

How is this book a companion book to The Giver? I haven't read it in forever but if there is any connection between the two it is very loose. The story had an interesting setting and plot, but it was left underdeveloped and oversimplified. Three stars might be too generous, but I didn't hate it, it just didn't live up to its potential.

Bad in a Dostoevsky kind of way, but good in Dostoevsky kind of way too! Except--more like a godless, American Dostoevsky who traded Christian theology for determinism, Darwin, and Freud. Or maybe I just mean that Dreiser can't write, but the story is sort of compelling anyway. PS--Woody Allen stole this plot, like, a couple of times.

This was really original and very good! I am very surprised with this book and I can't wait for spring 2012 to read Sapphire Blue!!!! and the ending and the sneak peak let me agonizing for more!! Another torture to endure for a whole year. I totally recommend it!!

This is a book that I read and still think about all the time. It is basically the 7 habits book applied to families but Stephen Covey and his wife (and their children) include a lot of personal stories that make it easy to apply. This is one of the those books that I reread every couple years because I like a lot of the ideas he presents. Useful, practical advice.
