I flipped for "Flipped"! "Flipped" was flippin' good. Ah, crap. That was dumb. Okay, I didn't know much about this book when I started it. I had no idea what to expect. Let me just express how pleasantly delighted I was by such a charming, sweet story. I couldn't put this down. So stinking cute, like the baby chick on the cover! In "Flipped" we learn there are two sides to every story, that people can change for the better, and that growing up is hard to do. The excitement and heartbreak of first love is something you never forget. I think you'll flip for this one too!

I just re-read this and I think it means more to me know that I am a father. No, I am not a father of a daughter yet. When I recently read the Autobiography of Malcolm X I thought it would be essential for me to encourage my newborn son, in years to come, to read. I have a bit of a pile- Walden Pond, Plutarch, H Rider Haggard, Malcolm X, and now I think this is absolutely essential to make sure my masculine little boy understands. Something I want to highlight- "Literature is open to everybody. I refuse to allow you, Beadle though you are, to turn me off the grass. Lock up your libraries if you like; but there is no gate, no lock, no bolt that you can set upon the freedom of my mind," p. 75-76. Instead of making her feel inferior, instead of spending all of your energies pushing her down why not, dear son, spend the time and energy lifting her up? Then you can work together, then your work will be so much better. In fact I think this might be good for a men's group. I was at a party once with some of our couple friends. We played that game, "Battle of the sexes" (I find it trite and stupid). They were so impressed with me that I knew what the reference "A room of one's own" referred to. It made me sad, this book should be common knowledge. To BOTH men and women. Come on, people, let's stop being stupid.

This is the first book in this series. I had read the fifth one last fall, and LOVED it, so was anxious to start at the beginning. All of the books take place in a small town in Quebec called Three Pines, and the crimes are investigated by Armand Gamache, from the Surete Office in Montreal. In this story, a well-liked former schoolteacher, Jane Neal, is found dead in the woods, and immediately there are all kinds of suspicions. For one, her dog was at home, and she was known for never leaving the house for a walk in the woods without her dog. Also, for the first time ever, she has entered a work in the local art fair, and though she has been painting for years, no one has ever seen any of her work. Her friends and neighbors are puzzled and frightened. When Gamache and his associates arrive to handle the investigation, we learn about many of the others in the town. When it is determined that Jane Neal was killed by an arrow, the story begins to go in a completely different direction. Likewise, when the will is read, more intrigue begins. Jane Neal's friends as well as Armand Gamache manage to work together to solve the crime. This is a well-written, well-paced mystery with some touches of Quebec history and thoughtful characters. On to #2!

I think I identified with Bridget Jones more than I would care to admit. The humor with which this book is written is timeless! Bridget's constant tracking of her weight fluctuation, her promises to herself to improve her lifestyle, and her humorous depictions of everyday life had me laughing out loud throughout the entire book. Worth a read, but WARNING: Not for younger readers. The movie is rated R for a reason, and the book is too. Certain "scenes" and language definitely make this not for younger readers.

A thorough journalistic account of the covert CIA overthrow of Jacobo Arbenz. Schlesinger and Kinzer's account originally published in 1982 holds up quite well in comparison to more recent analysis that benefits from the declassification of Department of Justice and CIA documents.

Wolfe' writing is magnificent. His social commentaries are as relevant today as when they were written in the 1930's. He does wander away from the main story frequently, but the stories within the story are well worth the read.

A good description of India's extreme politics during Indira Gandhi's time. But much more importantly this book focuses on the everyday challenges the lower and middle classes face. It's about taking charge of one's one life, helplessness, finding the right path in life and losing it.... Terribly sad. Wonderful description of characters and situations. Very realistic.

This book is extremely well written, and quite funny at times, but overall I came away with a feeling of sadness as it is so realistic in the rendering of misunderstandings between people who ultimately just want to be loved, heard, seen, understood. In the end, I just didn´t love it, but liked it enough to where I would certainly recommend it as a great read.
