Mawrer is clearly far more interested in the house than character development. By the end, one loves the setting but hates all the adult characters except the one whose fate with the Nazis is never revealed. For one shining moment we see Viktor cry, perhaps on the brink of some personal growth that never actually materializes - this is the last portrait we are given of him before we discover how he dies years later. Every male character in the book is virtually a carbon copy of the others - a consciousless philandering liar, save poor Oskar, whose wife is the philandering liar. The women characters are all overtly bisexual, which appears to be included more for the author's amusement and gratification than any plot value. Despite the serious lack of character development, growth, and likeability, there are some redeeming qualities to the book. The setting and political climate descriptions are engaging and fascinating. The interweaving of Czech and German culture throughout the narrative is also a credit. However - overall this is not a masterpiece by any means.

I have tried several times to explain to husband/friends why I REALLY REALLY REALLY liked this parenting book and what it comes down to is this: the author gives GREAT common sense logical parenting techniques that help you as the parent feel like you are in control and it gives you confidence in doing so! The author gives practical techniques (and the theory behind them) to help you parent your children with love and respect. I'd read some other parenting books like Love and Logic but thought this was LOADS BETTER. I just felt like this book totally hit the nail on the head and was realistic about what parents can expect from their children and what parents need to expect and demand of themselves! I highly recommend this book to anyone who has kids!

For some reason I did not connect to this like I did to Graceling. However, it will be interesting to see how the third books brings these two together.

First of all, it cracks me up that the majority of the reviews on Goodreads don't like this book because the main character is unhappy in 'a job a million girls would kill for.' The whole point of the book is that 'opportunity' is not a necessarily a great thing if it means putting the rest of your life to the side, and sometimes it's better to let the 'opportunity' go by. I'd been wanting to read this because I really enjoyed the movie and I had heard good things about it. Parts of it were, in fact, good. Story: I liked the general story - about a girl who finds herself working for a terrible human being and trying to weather it for a year, which is all she has to put up with before all of these doors are supposed to open for her. In the mean time, her life outside her job continues happening, but pretty much without her in it. Characters: I liked Andy at the beginning, I liked some of the supporting characters (not in the 'I want to know this person' kind of way, but in the 'I think they're pretty well characterized' kind of way), but some characters were just plain stereotypes, which was a bit annoying (like the loud, boisterous gay guy who always talks in ALL CAPS). Miranda herself was not as good of a character as in the movie - in fact, she's hardly a character at all, just an incarnation of selfishness - and Andy's boyfriend is a total jerk. Andy herself does get hard to relate to, but not because of her hating her job. I found it hard to relate to someone who would WALK AWAY FROM THEIR BEST FRIEND IN A COMPLETE CRISIS just for work, even though yes, I know that Miranda threw her into yet another impossible situation. I know that's kind of the point - that Andy gets to into her job - but for me, the crisis of conscience should have come earlier. The author felt that she had to drive the point home with a sledge hammer, I guess. Writing: the author could have used more editing. We find ourselves in the same situations again and again ("Christian is hot! But he's not my boyfriend! But he likes me! But he's not my boyfriend!") when really just once would have sufficed. Also, the writing is not great. It's not bad, it's just not great. I assume that the reason this book got such hype and glowing reviews is because that most books in this genre - and here I mean the headless skinny woman on the cover, or maybe just a pair of legs, which seems to signify chick-lit beach reads - really suck. I can't say for sure because this is the first of these books I've read. This book does not suck. But it's no great shakes, either. Overall, I preferred the movie.

The Mistborn series as a whole is very readable. It doesn't have the sweeping depth of Jordan's Wheel of Time, but it also isn't 14 books long either. I would read the series again if I had it to do over. One the whole, I enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this book. Being a huge fan of fantasy, I was swept up in the majesty and wonder of the world that was created by the author. There were lots of small intricacies that really made the world come alive for me. Tons of Houses, men the size of mountains (or were portrayed as such), and dragons on top of that! Loved it and can't wait to dive into the next one.

Interesting historical perspective on Texas, though fictional

Ava meets Jackson at a school event. They instantly fall in love and do everything together. But one day, something tragic happens, and Ava loses Jackson. She has a rough time going on without him, but one night she hears his voice and feels him in the room with her. She knows it sounds crazy, but she thinks that Jackson has come back to haunt her! As the days pass, Ava realizes that she can't go on loving a ghost and decides to change things. This was a cute, short read. Since it is written in verse, it goes by very quickly, but it also gives you a good message. I just felt that the majority of the book was like a broken record. Ava can't bear to be without Jackson. She misses him. It's all her fault. Repeat. I think Lyric is the most likable character in this story. He provides assistance to Ava when she needs it and he listens and understands her. He is by far my favorite character in the book. Overall, I give this book 3 stars. :)

I actually read this book twice for two different book groups. It is a book that merits reading twice in any event. It's style is so amazing and she truly captures a child's (in this case children -twins) viewpoint and place in time that it almost necessitates a 2nd reading to be sure you capture the essence and narration. It also gives you a great overview of India - it's culture, it's society, geography, time and place. It is a Booker Prize Winner and richly is deserving of that award.

Well, I have to admit I have been unable to actually read this book cover to cover. A significant number of the stories are weak and poorly written. I wll take another run at it and edit this as things change (if they do). Stand-outs include Snake Eyes of Borneo, and most notably Three Minutes of Freedom, by Lara Triback who, for any of you out Oregon ways, will be reading at Powell's bookstore on July 12. In the spirit of full disclosure the author is a good friend of mine, but regardless of the influence of public fealty, it was still the strongest piece of those I read by quite a good stretch. I'm quite interested in the thoughts of folks who've read it without the subjective slant I offer...
